Server Ram What's LRDIMM?

I haven't heard of LRDIMM. I am trying to replace ram in a dell box under warranty.

My spokes person asked me LRDIMM or registered. I figured it was just registered ram.????

What is LRDIMM? Is it better?
The server does a ton of CPU usage related stuff.

My apologies, I missed that part. Yes, QVL and Manual says that it supports LRDIMM but they have mentioned only about 32GB modules. The information is vague coz there other places where they have omitted it and where they could have added it. Anyways, IMHO only 32GB LRDIMM might work but before arriving at the conclusion confirm with SuperMicro support whether all sizes of LRDIMM memory work or just the 32GB. If it does, good for you.:sourire: Looking forward to...

Hello,

Could you let me know your server model name and number? Mixing Registered (RDIMM) and LRDIMM is not a good idea so make sure what type of memory you have. I see you have Registered ECC memory (RDIMM). It is better to know if your server supports LRDIMM not all servers support it.

Yes, LRDIMM is much better and costlier than Registered ECC (RDIMM) - Read the following article for in depth details of the same (http://electronicdesign.com/memory/take-lrdimm-challenge-boost-server-speed-capacity).

If you are looking for upgrading memory or overhaul of the existing memory with the new then I would be happy to assist you with the same. :cheese:

According to the motherboard specs, it doesn't support LRDIMM. It supports Non-ECC, Unbuffered ECC (UDIMM) and Registered ECC (RDIMM). This motherboard supports upto 1TB with 32 slots. So stick with RDIMM. There are many sites that deal with Server memory...... ex Kingston, Memorystock.com, Crucial etc. Check with any of the sites for memory upgrade options.

Since, you have RDIMM already try to match the speed, overhauling isn't necessary IMO. Good luck with the upgrade.:sourire:

LRDIMM stands for Load Reduced Dual Inline Memory Module. LRDIMMs are a step beyond RDIMMs. Whereas RDIMM's buffer the input-only address and command signals, LRDIMMs buffer the entire frame including the bidirectional data signals. These are only found in servers with absurdly large memory capacities, between 4 and 8 DIMMs per channel (more than 8 memory ranks).

Under the tested memory listing has a DDR3 1.35v LRDIMM option, and they apparently have tested an 32GB Stick of Samsung Ram.

Interesting as I think I'd prefer LRDIMM due to the 1TB Of ram going into this server.

I presume this means it is supported or??

LRDIMM is a necessity to reach that level of installed memory. I don't think that it's possible to reach that with only RDIMM
