This is sooooo not the case anymore. 64bit OS for windows has excellent support for drivers.

Agreed. Most worthy hardware is easily supported in Vista 64. ...and I hate to point out that Vista 64 seems to really outperform Vista 32...at least in my experience. I've actually been really surprised by how well it runs.

I was, until last month, a big proponent of Vista 64. More RAM, supposed better security, and better memory usage.

However, I can't begin to explain the hellacious experience I'm going through right now finding a compatible wireless card. I've tried several D-Links, NetGear, TrendNet to no avail. Have installed dozens of drivers (including several 3rd party)... still no dice. No useful support from any company although all adapters I have used claim "Vista 64-bit compatibility". Considering the dozen forum threads I have seen, apparently, I am not the only one having trouble with wireless networking (and with XP 64).

Long story short, 64-bit is great... unless you want to use wireless. In that case, steer clear.

Edit: Considering my Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, iPhone and girlfriend's MAC and Zune all can use my connection/router perfectly, this is ridiculous.

Edit: I forgot to mention, it could be your router is not capable of supporting ANY Vista capable wireless adapter. This is your likely problem.

Thanks. The D Link DWL-G122 used to work, but then Vista update screwed up compatibility somewhere along the line. Same with the Linksys WUSB. In any case, it never did work with RDP client.

Edit: My laptop running Vista 32 with a generic Intel adapter works perfectly on this router. Any one out there who's using a wireless adapter and Vista 64 successfully?

Other than this, I'd agree 64 is the way to go.

My wireless routers ar getting old. I called support and was told my routers will not support a wireless adapter under VISTA no way, no how 8). I will need three new Vista capable wireless routers real soon.

Not sue where the incompatibility lies, somewhere in the hardware itself. My routers are ancient, I don't know made when XP was young 8). Perfect example of old xp-era hardware that just will not work with VISTA. I don't know, I have like a 2 Wire SBC wireless router from maybe 6 years ago. I have three of them up and running. I have two VISTA systems and tweleve XP systems running on the three wireless routers in three locations. For the two VISTA systems, I use an Ethernet hub and connect the system directly to the router. All my systems, etc. work very well, but I need some new routers, network setups etc.

Yeah, but still, if the routers are 802.11 compliant I can't see why they'd not work in Vista, even if they don't offer WPA or WPA2 ...even an old router typically offers WEP. ...now, if your routers are not 802.11 compliant....

My work station: Q6600 oc'd to ~3.4, 8 gigs 6400. Os's XP 32 & 64, Vista 32 & 64 (recent add). For what I do, virtualization and animation with Autocad, 3DS Max, Maya, XP 64 is the only way to go. Vista is a serious resource hog and about 25% slower than XP. If SP2 for Vista or Windows 7 is not any better and when M$ drops support for XP, I'll seriously look at a Linux platform.

I have only 2 kinds of wireless adapters I use. I have five 2 wire and 3 or 4 Buffalo wireless adapters. I couldn't get the wireless adapters to work on my Vista systems. I called support (router support) and was told my router would not support ANY wireless adapter with VISTA. That's what they said, so I just got a ethernet hub and hooked my second machine hard wired to the router. I am not up to date on all the latest router specs and such. My routers are old 802.11 G I believe. The older version of 802....

Badge, that's really interesting. I asked one of my co-workers as well and they also said that sounded weird. Now I can see Vista not working with certain wireless cards, but anywho, I learn something daily. Well on the good side, I've seen Dynex WiFi routers for $29 in Best Buy, so I'm sure you could find a descent online for even cheaper.

Well, I'm usually persistent and manage to fix anything I start out on with my computers. I remember the support person who told me NO wireless adapter would work with my 2 wire wireless router was a woman. That was a while ago. Now that I think about it, she may not have known what she was talking about. I have three of these (I couldn't find a better link right now)

You mentioned Dynex WIFi router, are those good. Any recommendations for new routers and wireless cards? Thanks.

Edit in bold for spelling

Well, I won't say that just because she was woman she didn't know what she was talking about. ...but perhaps she didn't know what the **** she was talking about. I'd personally recommend going with a Linksys or D-Link WiFi router since I've had good experiences with those. I'd think that as long as you can use 802.11b/g, WPA2, use MAC filtering, and alter the transmitter power you should be okay with most brands. I wouldn't worry about Pre 802.11n (unless they can GUARANTEE compatibility when the final standards are set).

...just my 2 cents, but I'm not WiFi expert.

BTW, We used dial up for nearly a century 8). As soon as Hi speed Internet became available, we got it. I still have it!!! The original stuff from ancient times, LOL. I'm not hijacking the the thread, I'm just sayin'.

I have a QX running at 3.6GHz and 8GB of PEP with Vista x64 and I *love* it -- the speed and flawless operation, not Vista, which thinks it is smarter than I am (while this may be true, I want the option to be stupid).

I would LOVE to move to Linux, but I have too many Windows-only apps at the moment that have no alternative I am comfortable with.

Speaking of women, have you noticed how mean Hillary is? Man, what biatch. If she's elected I'm seriously considering having an underground shelter built and storing food. Incoming! Then I consider how well her husband's many peace treaty's worked. Wait, not one of her husband's Peace treaty's are worth the paper they are written on. Then there is the the crying. And the stain on the blue dress. What were you sayin....LOL.

For me its dual-boot. Both WXP 32 bit AND Vista Home Premium 64-bit with 4GB memory. I only have access to 2GB when under XP, but get access to the full 4GB under Vista. Let me tell you that Vista with 4GB is blazing fast.

I actually have used XP only 3 times in the last 6 months, one of which was to install my new BFG 8800GT OC2 VPU. It just tells a lot about just how much I like Vista, but I know it's only me ;-) .

On the other side, my laptop is still under XP and I won't upgrade for sure. Vista for new PC, but not for upgrade... at least for now.

Not to sound like a broken record, but... has anyone been able to use a wireless adapter successfully in Vista 64? If so, what router are you using?

5 different adapters I've tried on Vista 64 don't work - due to driver issues, they don't even pick up any signals, much less my own.

This is a total deal-breaker for many wanting to go to Vista 64. I definitely would have had a hard time convincing myself to go with 64 had I known about the wireless issues.

That comment from the support person about Vista not being compatible with any router is bunk. As I said, my Vista 32 laptop runs perfectly on my 4-year old Apex Docsics wireless router (802.11a/b). It also runs on many of my neighbors' routers :sol:
