Just built a new system.

Asus X870-A
9800X3D
64GB DDR 6000

Carried over my asus strix 3080ti OC for now.

plan has always been to get a 5080 when they are released. However I am facing the reality that it could be no dice on the 5080 and, if so, likely have to pay a premium. Also, my entire system is white and those arent as readily available.

Got me thinking maybe I pick up the asus 4080 super in white and be done with it and get a 5080 in a year or so.... cant find it anywhere unless its way overpriced. Or, perhaps switch completely and get a readily available Asrock 7800XTX for less than $1k.

I am not a hard core gamer.... I do mostly flight sim with some COD or others mixed in.

If I went with the 7800XTX I would achieve a few things: get something soon, get a white card & a nice upgrade over my 3080ti. Downside would be that I wanted an Asus card and losing out on the new power of the 5000 series.

What would you do?

Wait, see if you can get the GPU you want at launch. If you are in no rush to upgrade and already have a solid GPU, which the 3080 ti is still solid, makes no sense to rush the decision 2 weeks before the 5000 drops. You might get lucky and get what you want, and IMO I would definitely get the 5080 over the 7800xtx anyway.

I am in the same boat. I have a 4070 super, and in the process of moving my PC to a SFF case, and really want a 5080 to give me better 4k FPS. I just doubt I am going to be able to acquire one 😫 But I won't know for another 2 weeks.

It's also freezing here in MA and I am disabled with an autoimmune condition, so waiting in a line at Microcenter for 12 hours is not in the cards either.

Just wait a few months. It's not some huge sacrifice.

Yep. I'm gonna try to snag one at launch from Newegg and take the $1350 trade offer for my 4090.

Option B is to take the $1250 cash offer I got from a guy at work and buy the 5090 from any vendor.

Option C is being content with the 4090 if the 5090 is unavailable at MSRP for a while. I certainly don't need the 5090... this is really all about getting the most value for the 4090 while I still can.

Well, unless you absolutely need a GPU, surely the best strategy would be to sit on your existing one a little while longer? A few months down the line prices will have stabilized and availability increased which is win-win for us consumers. FOMOing gamers are AMvidia's bread and butter in the retail sphere.

The generational performance uplift between 4090 and 5090 being just 33%, can only mean one thing: 4090 maintains its value.

And, considering the fact that the prices for a brand new 4090 currently start far above 2,000$, even a used one should be worth more than 1,250$.
$1,500 is probably reasonable. I've seen them anywhere from $1,300 to $1,700 used on ebay depending on the model.

That's what's crazy about the market. I paid $1599 for it and it's selling for $2k.

You're right about the $1250... I'm not that desperate. I would take the $1350 trade offer from Newegg over selling on eBay for $1500 so if I can snag one at launch or soon after that's most likely the route I will go.

I personally wouldn't get the 5090 unless I could get at least $1500 for my 4090 and am able to secure a 5090 at MSRP. It's just not enough of an upgrade to drop $7,00-$1,000 or so. But then again, I am about to spend $500 out of pocket on a 5080 for a 50% upgrade........I guess it just depends on your needs. With my 4070 super I really need that 50% to keep me above 60 fps in 4k.

The 5090 upgrade isn't needed... yet. I'm more in it for the resale of my 4090.

I would take the $1350 newegg trade offer without hesitation. $1500 on eBay - eBay fees would net the same or less... and a newegg trade is no risk. There's lots of risk on eBay. I've personally never had an issue... but I've also never ran into the guy who buys my GPU then files a bogus complaint with eBay (who favors buyers over sellers) stating the card is defective and sends me back a different GPU... then you have a major headache/hassle on your hands.

I'll take less to avoid that.

At any rate... I will get a 5090 at MSRP. Be it on launch day or 6 months later. Definitely not paying scalper fees. The 4090 meets all my 4K gaming needs and will be more than sufficient while I wait.

Recently sold a gpu on eBay and took photos of the serial number, those photos are in the listing. So if they were to send me back a different gpu I’d have a decent idea. Plus I have a separate bank account from my primary bank account as well as a separate savings account. So the funds got moved over to a savings account not linked to eBay. So if they tried to force me to do an unjust refund, good luck collecting.

But I made sure to say the card was as is. I’ve been fortunate that I’ve had good luck with buyers over the years though. Now Microcenter has a gpu trade in program similar to Newegg if you bought the gpu from Microcenter. So from now on I’ll probably use that and not have to worry about selling a gpu on eBay.

Playing bait and switch w/a 4090 on ebay in the USA would open your potential scammer up to a lot of felony charges, incl. federal felony charges.

I agree.

Like I said... I've never had an issue selling on eBay. I have heard horror stories from those that have however. Many have said "I will never sell on eBay again."

With the newegg trade offer being a hassle free $1350 that definitely is the way to go IMO when you factor in eBay fees and associated risk.
