Should I upgrade my Sandybridge?

Hello everyone!

So I have an i-7 2600k Sandybridge at 3.4GHz with two GTX 980's in SLi. I was just hoping to get some input from the community regarding my plan to upgrade from the SLi setup to a single GTX 1080ti. Would I see any significant upgrade? And also, I'm on the fence over upgrading my CPU and the domino effect this could cause with upgrading the motherboard and so on.

As it stands, I'm also planning on buying a new monitor, like the SAMSUNG C27HG70 curved monitor (144Hz) or something similar. So in short I'm looking to upgrade to the 1080ti, and the monitor. Should I expect a reasonable increase in performance, and is it possible the sandybridge would bottleneck the graphics card very much? Any input or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks guys

Where you will see a significant difference between a new i7 and a Sandy Bridge i7 is in productivity apps. You do a lot of complex simulations or encode things with Handbrake a lot? You'd see a real difference in those applications.

In terms of fps in games? Not so much.

I'd prefer a 1080ti to SLI 980. Even with perfect scaling, the 1080ti ought to be slightly better and you never get remotely near perfect scaling, especially now that support for multi-GPU solutions gets worse every year. Back when GTX 400s were a thing, I felt comfortable advising people to add a second one if they have a good PSU. Nowadays, it's rare that I advise that, mainly in extremely high-end builds in which there just isn't a single-GPU solution available.

Thanks for the response!

Ha I totally hear you about the graphics cards. When I got the SLI setup for the 980's I have been progressively let down as many games I play take no advantage of SLi whatsoever. So I figured if I got the 1080 ti I would be able to take full advantage of the monster no matter what game I play. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't lose any performance by going from SLi to a single card, from what I have seen it seems very likely that the 1080ti will outperform the 980's in SLI so I'm happy for that.
