I am looking to buy a new computer to do basic functions (word processor, etc.), multitask (music, virus scan, internet), and game at a reasonable level (mid to high range).

This is what I got so far...

Pentium D 820 2.8 Ghz
Geforce 7800 GTX
2 Gig RAM

Basically, I am wondering if I should upgrade the processor. Keep in mind, that I am not planning on completely pimping out my computer (I am a college student and do not have a lot of cash), but want the games to look and play well. My only concern is that my processor may be undermining my video card and RAM. Should I upgrade to 3.0 Ghz or will the dual processor combined with the video card and RAM balance everything out? Please help me, I really do not understand what makes games go faster (RAM or the processing speed).

Two things:

1) Get a 7900GT, which performs better and costs less than the 7800GTX.
2) Don't get the Pentium D 800 series. Get the 900 series, with the 65nm core. Or better yet, get an AMD Athlon x2 3800+

Oh yeah; what will really make a game go faster is the video card. A good video card with an okay CPU and sufficient RAM (think 3GHz Pentium 4 and 1GB RAM) will perform better in games than a computer with a bad video card and a top of the line CPU and lots of RAM (think Pentium D Extreme Edition and 2GB of RAM.

nothings wrong with your setup, if your looking for faster load times for online play concider a 10 000 rpm HD WD makes nice ones.

other then that theres nothing wrong with your processor, its not the fastest being a D 820 but an upgrade will give you one boost, your wallet being lighter with no noticable increase.

dont be stupit wait 6 months to a year.

read what he said he has a 7800 gtx right now
i doubt he can afford anotehr card again

By saying "this is what I got", he's implying that it's what he's decided upon already. It would make no sense to buy a CPU, and then ask if it should be upgraded as not to bottleneck the video card.

I would go with this processor instead of the Pentium D. Don't be thrown off by the lower clock speeds; this processor won all but three benchmarks (PCMark 2005 - CPU, PCMark 2005 - memory, Pinnacle Studio 9 plus) on Tom's CPU chart. Note that both PCMark benchmarks are synthetic, in other words, aren't real world tasks, and are just benchmarks that look at your CPU information and give you a number.

I would also go with this graphics card instead:

It is cheaper than a 7800GTX, yet performs slightly better.

AMD64 S939 does a lot better in gaming and all other tasks. Go for a mid-range X2 or Opteron 1xx.

You only need 2GB if you are planning to play BF2.

I would recommend a 7900GT or X1900.

The GTX is nice but overkill.

2GB of RAM is all you'll need for quite some time. I'd get the 7900GT if you already haven't purchased the 7800GTX. Saves money for the same performance.
