First of all: Can you use both an SSD and an HDD on a laptop without an optical drive?
The Real Question: Should I use a 480GB SSD or a 1TB HDD?
My Current Situation(very detailed):
I should soon receive a laptop that I ordered online (model and specs @ bottom), and I should also receive a 480GB SSD that has been given to me as a gift (I can't afford it myself, so that should send an idea about my budget). My immediate intentions were to setup the SSD into the primary drive bay and move the default HDD (the one that comes with the laptop) into the optical bay; this way, I could utilize both drives. However, this laptop doesn't have an optical drive, so unless there is still a method to use both an SSD and an HDD, I am forced to choose one or the other. I plan on using this laptop A LOT and for a VERY LONG TIME.
Everything I will be using the Laptop for (Listed in order of priority):
-Lots of programming (computer science major)
-Using professional applications for video/photo (watching, editing, importing, exporting, etc.)
-Lots of music and applications for music (listening 24/7, editing for videos, etc.)
-Microsoft Office applications
-Other possible college activities (writing, research, etc.)
-Internet
-NO Video Games
My Current Reasoning:
I am leaning towards the 480GB SSD because of the obvious benefits that you get from solid state drives and also because it was a gift. The capacity seems as though it should suffice, however, I intend to use this laptop for college (4+ years) and quite possibly for a while after college (til I can gather the money for an upgrade, soooo yeah...). Like I said, I plan to use this laptop A LOT, so with a dense 5+ years of usage, it is a bit hard for me to feel confident about the storage capacity. I'm definitely fine with the HDD, but the luxury of an SSD would be awesome. I think I just need someone from the internet to give me a little shove one way or the other.
My Laptop: Acer Aspire V3-572G-73Q8 with the specs as listed on the website:
-Windows 8.1
-15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) 16:9
- Intel® Core™ i7-5500U Dual-core Processor 2.40 GHz
- 16 GB, DDR3L SDRAM
- 1 TB HDD
- NO Optical Drive (ffs, fml)
