[SOLVED] Should there be continuity from data to power side of SATA / USB adapter?

I bought a medium priced usb to SATA adapter to plug a 2.5 inch hdd or ssd into a pi.
Sort of five pounds type cost.
A simple enough cable I thought.

Should there be continuity between the power side to the data side please?

When I run my continuity tester between the two there is a circuit.
So there is an electrical connection between the two.
(data and power connectors.)

(If that makes sense?)

If you're poking only at the SATA connector, the only thing I'd expect to have continuity are pins 1,4, and 7 on the data side to pins 4-6, 10, and 12 on the power side because those are ground.

OK, brilliant, thank you.
I have only poked on the sata end and only roughly.
I will need to get something smaller to have a more accurate poke

I was surprised that anything from the data side connected to anything in the power side.
My thinking was that inside a pc, the cables are completely separate.
But I see what you are saying, they would both need to connect to the same ground in the USB end wouldn't they.

Thank you very much for your confirmation.
I could not work out some things atg the time.
My ssd was not formatting right, then it failed completely, even popped the circuit in my place when I plugged it into pc.
An hdd was clicking when plugged into adapter.
I have a Khadas tone board which was ocassionally stopping working when i touched it.
(assumed that a cable was dodgy but it hasn't happened since i stopped using dodgy adapter.)
I am now wondering if it has a protection circuit in it or something.

It cost me an ssd and a torch that i was charging via pc usb when i plugged in this adapter.
Plus LOADS of time.
I hope it hasn't caused any other issues in laptop, pc or pi that i plugged it into.
I wish I had twigged the connection much earlier.
A faulty adapter cable didn't even trigger in my mind.
I can't recall if there were any other things at the time now.
Edit: Oh, it popped a small spdif out card as well.

Pretty disappointed generally.
