I have just rebuilt a machine for my grandson with windows 98. It runs FS9
very well. There is a Soundblaster live Card No CT4780 which now works fine
and a Nvidia 5600 graphics which is quite impressive as it will run two
monitors.. However the joystick (above) which I was given, will not work. I
have connected it to the sound card game port and installed the correct
software. It keeps coming up in that as 'not connected'.
I have got a cheap USB joystick to work, but I wd like to connect this nice
big boy. Any suggestions?
I have also downloaded and installed the latest win 98 sound driver but to
no avail...

Was the joystick working before? Did you try different USB ports?

I had a simular problem, and I couldn't solve it. So I removed the
Soundblaster card and replaced it with a cheap card from a PC recycle store.

A few words of advice:
1. The Sidewinder Version 1 is a little on the fragile side (I've broken
several) so be careful with it.
2. To set this joystick up is a little tricky. The best way is to create a
Profile that is blank, where you assign nothing to any of the buttons, in
fact, name it 'Blank' and save it. Then go in your game (simulation) and
assign buttons there.
3. Assign the same buttons to do the same tasks in all your games
(simulations). That will pay big dividends down the road, when you have lots
of games to play.
4. Beware of DirectX 9. As long as I was running DirectX 8, my CPU could
keep up, but when I got DirectX 9, it began to lock up in all my flight
games, forcing a blue screen and crash to desktop or a cold reboot.
5. If you get it working, try Fighter Ace, as it only requires DirectX 8 to

In Game Controllers, and when you select Add controller,where it has Game
port is there another option there to select IE:standard game port and
Creative Game port.

Yes it was always working before, but it not a USB joystick, only game
port..

Have you checked in Device Manager that the game port is working properly?

Yo Quilly, did you look to see if the mother board has a built in gameport
too? That would give you two gameports and under Win98 that's a problem.

Good point Dally! But I checked and it hasn't. Give me 24 hrs as I have to
use one of my monitors to run the thing and I can't spare one right now!

Quilly: If I am not mistaken there was quite a discussion on this problem
about a year ago. It was finally decided that the older game port MS
Sidewinder FFB's with the game port terminal would not work with FS9, but
the newer models with the usb terminal would work fine with FS9 and even Win
xp. I do know that my MS Sidewinder FFB usb stick works well on my XP pro
FS9. Bill

Hi Bill,
Yes I remember that discussion, but it was about it not working with WinXP.
In this case, I have installed Win 98 which it used to work with fine in my
friend's house. All I have done is to replace the HD for a bigger one.. Very
strange.

Hi Quilljar -- I have an old style MS Sidewinder FF stick with the old
gameport connection and it won't work with Win XP because MS haven't
produced the drivers for this device.

It is a very good joystick and I am very reluctant to throw it away and I'm
just hoping that one day some good soul out there will write the drivers for
it so that I can use it on FS9 with WIN XP. I'm using a Saitek FF stick at
the moment, but it isn't the quality of the Microsoft one !

Anybody know if anyone has written any updated WIN XP compatible drivers
for this combination ?

Hi Moke,
The whole point of my posting was that I am using the stick with Windows98.
I know it won't work with XP that is why I had to buy a USB FFB stick for my
own machine. But now I have what ought to be the perfect combination for the
old thing and it still won't work... I have built this up for my grandson
from freebies.

Proper diagnostics always start at the source, in this case the
sidewinder... can you dig up or borrow another gameport joystick to plug in
to see if that works? That would tell you if the Sidewinder is hosed.
