Silly CPU ID question

On my Tecra8100 (toshiba laptop). I think I have a piiiM 700mhz.

The "System Information" tool on Win2k says ~697mhz

The intel cpu frquency tool says 550 mhz.

PC Wizard 2003 & CPUZ tool I found at cpuid.com both reports 548mhz.

So who is right? Or why do I get different results on Win2k?

well here is my hypothesis...windows does not update its frequency...it stay the same from start up...so my guess is (since its a laptop) that when the cpu is not under much load it trims back the speed to save power...i think you are fine in other words...i bet if you check the speed when it is pluged into the wall (not using batery) that it will show 700mhz (from cpuid or other ID programs) but even then maybe not.

Ok, I gues I buy that...although I was on AC power...I actually have no idea what my Win2k power settings are...Oh and under linux (rh8), the kernel reports a piii 697mhz...

so is there a good/reliable tool for CPU Id'ing, that is not subject to this 'speed step' stuff?

well the software you are using seems to be getting around speed step just fine...try running that program with your cpu under 100% load...i bet that it will go back to 700mhz...or take a look in your bios most of the time it says the cpu frequency...i doubt toshiba would purposly give you a lower clocked cpu...and if windows is reporting it as 700 then i beleive it...what multiplyer is the comp running...(use a cpuid program). Also try a program called cpu Z i like it better than h.odas cpuid it tells you what the cpu was originally ment to run at...even when overclocking my pIII 700 (desktop) is shown to be a pIII 700 @ 945.
