Question Size of drop-down menu in the files explorer

Hello,

When saving a file (under a new name, i.e. "save as") the explorer opens and you can type the first letters of the file in order to search for the file names already present that begin with these letters. This is very practical if you want to successively save a series of files with almost the same name except, for example, a different number.

In this case a drop-down menu is displayed with a maximum of 16 occurrences. On a large screen (high resolution) it would be possible to display many more than 16 names. Which would be useful if you successively save a series greater than 16... For the moment you have to use the elevator to see more names. It's a bit annoying.

I imagine that a setting in the registry allows you to change this limit of 16. Does anyone know this setting?

Thanks.

Are you able to enlarge the window by moving the upper edge to the uppermost edge of the monitor and then drag the lower edge of the window downward? As close to the bottom of the monitor as possible?

I can do so and depending on the number of files the elevator bar will disappear depend on the number of files listed.

And you may be able to see more of the files by changing the view:

For example from Details to Small icons.

Registry edits are not recommended and only should be attempted after a full system backup including the registry itself. (Full system backups being something that should always be being done anyway.....)

Yes I can !
But my idea was to increase the number of displayed occurences to speed up the processus. Probably there is an item in the registry to modify. But where ?
A specialist of registry is need...

Thanks.

Not a "specialist of registry" (full disclosure); however, Registry edits are not recommended.

Even if some registry tweak is identified and implemented some future Windows update that includes registry changes may find and 1) undo the change, and/or 2) completely choke and bring the system to an unexpected halt.

Plus multiple edits could be necessary..... For example the number of visible files varies with both the View chosen and the size of the window.

That said, if you are working with large numbers of files, then consider using DOS or Powershell cmdlets/scripts to find the files and do the renaming.

You will have far more flexibility and customization available to address the searching and renaming requirements.

May or may not be all that difficult. And safer.

In any case, when it comes to any sort of file management activities be sure that the orignal files are fully backed up away from the host system, and proven recoverable and readable.

And to stay in the spirit of trying help I did some searching/googling and found this relatively current ( March 2,204) Microsoft link:

It is not what you want do but your requirement is fairly similar.

Please, again note the direct cautions about registry edits.
