sizing of windows screen

i am new at this so i may be asking this question to the wrong group, if so
please advise where i should post the question. here goes:

after someone else used my computer, i suddenly found that the screen sizing
is much larger, e.g. the icons on the desktop are three times larger and the
back ground screen is not the usual color it was and the tool bar is larger
and when i use the internet or my Word program everything is much larger and
partly doesnt fit on the page as it used to.

how to a change this so that my desktop is back to the usual size and my
Word program is normal size again.

thanks for your attention to what must seem to be beginners question
my program is Windows 1998. Thanks
