I understand Skylake doesn't support Win7 installation from a USB stick. Can I install from a DVD ROM without adding USB drivers to the DVD?

If you have an internally connected DVD drive (ide or sata) it wouldn't need USB drivers, but IDK if it will install on Skylake or not. I don't have Skylake to test it out.

An external DVD will need drives just like a thumbdrive AFAIK.

The reason Skylake has problems with Windows 7 is because they removed the EHCI protocol from the USB controllers and only support xHCI from here on out. Windows 7 does not have any xHCI drivers by default, so they need to be slipstreamed onto the image if you're installing it through a USB stick. If you have a SATA DVD drive and install from the DVD, it should work fine, provided you have a PS2 mouse or keyboard, USB mice and keyboards won't work until the xHCI driver is installed, which would be included on the motherboard's driver DVD.

I have a PS2 port on my Z170 board and a PS2 mouse but not a PS2 keyboard. Do I actually need both to install Win 7 for Skylake? It seems to me I wouldn't get away with only a mouse...

Yeah, you'd want to have a keyboard, it's possible to install without a mouse, but missing a keyboard might be a bit tricky if they want you to input a product key, though you could give it a try. Worst case, you might have to create a bootable USB and slipstream on the xHCI driver, or look at getting a USB to PS2 adapter to allow your keyboard to work.

You will likely need your KB plugged into the USB 2 port with legacy support enabled in the bios. Shouldn't be a problem because you don't have a PS2 KB.

My wife's new Skylake PC has a combination mouse kb PS2 port too, I wonder why those peices of crap are coming back.... (she just got it Tuesday).

I found the solution with the Windows USB Installation Tool
Gigabyte (Note) Support Intel 100 series motherboards.
OS: Windows 7 32bit,Windows 7 64bit.

It is the 2nd item in the utility download list at gigabyte.com. The first attempt blue screen. The 2nd attempt success. No PS2 keyboard or mouse was needed. Cheers!
