Hey everyone. I recently dished out the $60 for Skyrim (don't ask why I didn't torrent it, I'm no thief, but that's not what this is about) and to my dismay, it runs like oblivion does on my PC, like absolute crap. Outside, my FPS is playable, but low. I get about 30-60 (60 only in very open areas) FPS in most areas on high settings. However, in Whiterun, I get a very choppy 20-35 FPS, which is unacceptable for my system. This goes for all of the cities, including one where I average at 15 FPS.

My system:
ATI Radeon 5770 (I have 2 but one is disabled because of negative CFX scaling)
Phenom 2 x6 1055T (not fit for overclocking)
4GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
Corsair GS800 PSU

I have been playing on high settings 8XAA 8XAF with FXAA disabled.

I also have the same kind of issues with oblivion and I get similar FPS in both games.

I know you're right.

The fix you gave me helped some - before that I was getting about 30fps.

I have jacked with my GPU's too much (trying to get them to work good with various games) - they're all screwy.

That is why I recommend Nvidia to most people. This was my first real build and it's caused me nothing but trouble.

Sorry to hear that; this is my first build with a Radeon HD card, after years of using Nvidia cards, and I can say they both have performed greatly. So I will recommend both, it's just a matter of the best pricing versus what they can offer for that money you're paying for your hardware.

With the last patch, on my machine, with not-at-all powerful HD 5770, I am getting 60-70 FPS outside, and into 80's inside. The best thing after the latest patch is the fact I am getting 40-45 FPS in big cities (Markarth, which was painful, Whiterun, Solitude). So there is definitely something wrong with your build mate, you should be getting way more quality gaming out of Skyrim than you currently do.

After months of driver problems, it is no surprise that I have trouble here.

BF3, I get about 80+fps maxed out.

Skyrim, about 40fps - and even when I dial down the settings it stays the same.

I do a little better when disabling Crossfire.

I did try to uninstall all drivers and then update them manually, but it didn't help.

I know if I had went with a pair of 570's I wouldn't be having this problem.

After noticing almost everyone's problems with Crossfire and SLI, I know for sure I will never go for either of those solutions. Games are running perfectly fine for me as it is, and I also have less of a headache.

+1

Yeah, I would say a single 570 would be sufficient for anything that is available today, and perhaps a 580 if you want to be absolutely sure.

In the future a single 7970 would suffice well.

I don't think I should have went down this road, but since I'm already on it, not much I can do but stick it out. In my defense, I never planned on crossfiring. I started with a single 6970 and needed a little more power for BF3 so, hey, about my only option was to grab another.
