Sledgehammer**

I am a poor a$$ college boy and I am going to buy an Asus A7V.. however, I am wondering if the Sledgehammer processor is going to be backwards compatible with this MoBo. I am an avid gamer and because I am a poor a$$ college boy, new MoBo upgrades aren't going to in m future. Will this work..

Also.. what do you guys think is the best AMD purchase? Value performace (w/oclocking)

hey GaLLant, I would say no. I mean Sledgehammer (correct me if i am not 100%) will use DDR, LDT, and it's a 64bit CPU! now this is just a guess but I would say no way in hell will it work.

soup.

AMD for Life!

sledgehammer is a 64 bit chip, and i dont think it would be backwards compatible with the athlon (AMD could well make a socketA sledgehammer - with multiplexed 32 bit data buses and the LDT et al features turned off and support for SDRAM chipsets, just like the 8088 against 8086, but i dont think so)

A7V is the best choice as far as socketA/SDRAM is concerned, and you could have a Duron 600 or 800 which could be o/c to upto 1G-1.1G easily. A7V supports overclocking very well. besides you wont need to change the mobo if you ever upgrade to athlon! 🙂

That's no good.. So question then.. do you think that I should wait a couple of months and get the sledgehammer or go with the duron? You sure you want to suggest a duron to me? Not an athlon or tbird? Oh yeah, my price range will be about $100 for the processor.

sledgehammer wont be available till next half of 2k1, so as for now you have to stay with durons and athlons

if you have a budget of $100 (i dont really know how much it is in US terms (i am an Indian and speak in rupees) but $100 is quite a lot and i dont think any athlon fits in that budget) so you could as well go for a duron 800 or so and nivest the rest of the money on a good motherboard and a good cooling system (u may like to overclock your duron)
till then you could always upgrade to athlon as the prices come down. duron offers much advantage for its price especially if you are not much into number crunching apps.

sledgehammer would need a board upgrade as well so no need to worry about it anyway.

If you want to wait for over a year (Q1 2001), then get a Clawhammer (Sledgehammer is a server chip). If you want one soon, then I suggest an Athlon/Duron on a DDR board.

You can wait until DDR boards come out and then get a duron or revised athlon at 133MHz FSB, or you can get one the good boards out now. Either way the system will be fast. The performance increase of the DDR will be somewhat marginal. What are you running now? Is it that bad? I am still running a K6-3 400, but it runs modern games fine. I upgraded my video and I am hoping I can hold off for a nice DDR board in a few months. As far as price/performance, my friend bought a duron 700 for $60 and it kicks the hell out of my bro's P3 700. You can get a Tbird 750 for about $100 or a duron 700 for $60 that you can OC up to a gig. Your call.
