Sli gtx 970 can't hold 60 fps on most intensive games

I recently got a second 970 to go with the one i already had with my system expecting it to improve my overall performance to near or the same as a 980 ti like how many people say they will, how ever i can hardly get 60fps on very high settings in GTA V, fallout 4 is at round about 40fps, and battlefield 4 has constant fps drops and dips to the 30 fps range when there is explosions and fire.
i could really use a fix for this because i am currently down £250 with worse performance.
system specifications
cpu: i5 4670k
gpu: gtx 970
gtx 970
mobo: asus z97-A
psu: 750w
RAM :16gb hyperX 2400MHz
all the games are running off a 1TB WD black

Silly question but is your sli setup configured properly?

2x msi 907's with a 750 watt cooler master g750m
and i am pretty sure it's configured correctly, even with one card running it cant get 60 in games a 970 should

Sounds like a pcie lane issue. I had same experienxe with an evga z87 classified. Sli only worked in slot 1 and 2, which means non reference coolers were a no go. I sold the mobo and got a gigabyte. Asus customer support is useless, so id recommend try finding more on your mobo specs and pcie lanes. I recommend sticking to the trusted mobos of gigabyte in the future. Try sli in slot 1 and 2 if you are in 1 and 3 or 1 and 4. If sli works in slot 1 and 2, its a pcie lane issue and id sell your mobo or your cards in favor of a single gpu. Good luck.

well i do have a mother board that supports sli and could test the cards in that to see if something changes?

my motherboard has 2 pcie x16 slots and they are far enough away from each other to run non reference cards so im sure it's not the placement

A slot is different than a PCI-E lane. Just because it has a slot doesn't mean it's compatible to run SLI in those two slots.
