SLI or not

I currently own a GTX 960 direct from nvidia. I want to upgrade my system soon as it is quite old and only entry level. Obviously i wanted to to upgrade my gpu with it and i was wondering if i should buy another 960 to put in SLI or spend an extra ~£50-60 and get a 970.

Furthermore, can i mix two different gpu manufacturers in SLI. EG, i got one 960 direct from nvidia and the other from EVGA for example. Does that work.

If you have a sli capable motherboard, and a 600w psu, you should be able to run sli.
Yes, you can use different brands of gtx960.
You will win fps benchmarks, with sli, but your gameplay will be generally better with a single strong card like a GTX970.
And... some games do not support sli.

what aspects will be better with a 970 rather than an SLI. (I only have a1080p monitor)

I would recommend looking at reviews and benchmarks of your cards in SLI on games you play/plan on playing. If your comfortable with the negatives that come along with SLI then go for it. I personally got tired of having to jerry rig every game I played just to utilize my second card.
