SLI two different gpus

Hey guys, really noob question here...

Can I SLI to different GPUs? I am fine with the one I have, but it is expensive. So can I buy a slightly cheaper version if it and put them in SLI? Thanks guys!

I think they have to be the same chip like a 970 & a 970. As long as they are the same chip I don't this the cost maters.

I mean can one be a 1070 and the other one be a 980 for example. Still by MSI, same line and stuff.

It has to be the same GPU and, I think, the same quantity of VRAM. You can put an MSI GTX970 with an ASUS GTX970, but you can't technically put a 660ti 3GB with a 660ti 2GB without there being some serious stability problems.

Well, you actually can. But it will only work for PhysX, you can't use them like a "normal" SLI.
