I have win xp fresh install with sp2 and Norton Antivirus and firewall.

My system can take up to a minute to boot up to user screen, can also freeze
on close.

What can I do to stop this happening?

What applications start with Windows?

Have you scanned for viruses and spyware?

If your hard drive is FAT32, when is the last time you defragged it?
Have you tried using msconfig to boot without the normal startup items?

To see what programs are starting with Windows, do this:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information. In
the left hand pane, click on Software Environment and then click on Startup
Programs. In the right hand pane you will see the programs that start with
Windows. Every program that starts with Windows adds to your startup time

You need to be 100% certain that your system is free of viruses and spyware.
For more help with this, see the following article from Microsoft:

A word about spyware: It can be very difficult to detect and remove spyware.
Usually, you need more than one spyware detector/remover to be reasonably
sure your computer is spyware-free.
