Slow internet with ethernet cord on only one PC

I've been having slow internet with an ethernet cord on only my PC, not others. I've tried new ethernet cords and ethernet adapters as well as scanning for malware with malwarebytes. I've tried power cycling and plugging the cord in directly to the modem instead of the router. Not sure what is causing it.

Edit: I'm paying for 1 Gbps and I'm getting 200 Mbps

The different ports on the router are the same. I even got an entirely new router and it's still the same. I've tried connecting it directly to the modem and it's the same. I've connected other PCs and they get the correct speeds. It's only mine that's having the issue.

I have an asus AC5300 router and the modem is something from my ISP. I don’t believe those are the main cause of the issue, though, since they work fine with other computers.

I’ve connected the modem and router to my PC via Ethernet and got the same speed. I tried other cords and got the same speed. Connected the modem and router to a different PC with the same cords and got the correct 1 Gbps speed.

Then the computer itself is obviously the fault source. I find it strange that you got the same speed (limit) regardless of your conection. What method do you use when testing the speed?

Also - is this a new or old computer? Is this a problem that just happened some day, or has it being a problem for long time?

I know it's my computer that's the problem, but since it's a custom built PC I'd like to know which piece of hardware could be responsible. I used both RCN's speed test and speedtest.net as well as a couple other speed test sites that I can't remember the name of.

It's a seldom thing that a hardware error itself is the direct cause of poor network performance.

Here is a thing that may rule out a hardware problem - Try booting up with a Linux Live-cd, and then try to connect to internet and see if it's still poor performance.

Your NIC might be the issue. Potentially the driver is messed up for not up to date. Has this PC always had the slow internet or have you tested it on a different internet like at a friends?

Have you tried plugging in a different network adapter? Rule out it isn't your Network adapter that's broken and disable it and plug in an external adapter and see what speed you get from that.

But based on your troubleshooting, the issue seems isolated to just your computer, so I would assume it would be a singular issue with just that desktop.

When I first upgraded to 1 Gbps it was giving me 1 Gbps. I've tried the network adapter on my motherboard, and another one that I bought and it was the same. Then I bought a second adapter and it was no different. I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers and it was the same slow speed. I'm convinced it's some part of my PC that's messed up but I don't know what it could be.

I tried safe mode and the latest motherboard drivers and it made no difference.

So just to clarify:
1.Router and Modem are most likely working correctly since other devices connect correctly and work properly.
2. All the cables are good since you've swapped them and tested them all.
3. Not your ISP because you said other devices work properly.

Seems like everything is isolated to that one PC. You probably already considered this but did you make sure to disable your motherboard network adapter when you plugged in a new network adapter? Have you checked that those new adapters can support the speed you want?
Aside from that, all I can think of is maybe a system setting or network setting got messed with and is somehow limiting your speed. I've seen fixes where people just had to uncheck some dumb setting in their properties that was limiting their speed.

Basically if I was in your situation, I would have done everything you already did and at this point, drop off the computer to a tech and have them go through it since it seems like its just your PC that is having an issue.

I managed to fix it by reinstalling Windows, but to answer your question I did in fact disable the other ports and even the wireless network adapter. I made sure that the 2 ethernet adapters both supported 1 Gbps as well as the ethernet cable. Wish I could have figured out exactly what it was in case this happens again.
