First off I'd like say say that socket AM3 has 938 pins, this is a fact and I encourage you to look it up with you think otherwise. I've have seen a lot of misinformed posts so I wanted to clear that up.

1. I know it will fit at least, but will socket AM3 processors work work with on 939 motherboards?

2. If they will work, are there any drawbacks to running AM3 processors on 939 motherboards. At least the good news it that I don't need a new mob and new ram.

I'm gonna go with a "not a chance" AM3 CPUs will work on 939 motherboards. Reason being, 939 is DDR, and AM3 CPUs have memory controllers for *only* DDR2 & DDR3.

Sorry man, need an AM2, AM2+, or AM3 motherboard. But you can get a good AM2+ board and 4Gb of RAM for ~$120.

The answer to your question is no. The brand new Phenom II x3 triple core cpu and the Phenom II x4 quad core cpu are designed to work with the new AM3 motherboards and DDR3 memory. The cpu's are backwards compatible and will work with AM2+ motherboards and DDR2 memory but performance will be reduced. The cpu's will not work with the old socket 939 motherboards which were for single core cpu's and DDR memory.

In addition, there are Phenom II x4 quad core cpu's such as the 940 and 920 that are designed for AM2+ motherboards and DDR2 memory. They will not work with the old socket 939 motherboards and DDR memory either.

Tom's Hardware just did a very good article about the two versions of the Phenom II cpu's. You can find a link to the article on the home page.

The new cpu's and the old socket 939 motherboards are two different things with different requirements.

 I am afraid not......sorry.

Nope. Not only is the pin layout different but the ability to use DDR memory has been phased out for some time. The initial AM2 chips had a DDR1 capable controller since AMD was using the same dies for their late socket 939 parts, but it's been phased out in latter core revisions for a while since it wasn't used with AM2 boards.

Anyway you can get a good AM2+ board that has AM3 capability pretty cheap now. I believe the ASrock 780G based board that supports AM3 CPUs can be had for as little as $57 on New Egg.

Well actually 939 was the first dual core CPU's but no it will not work like was mentioned no DDr controller only DDR2 and DDR3 for the pII.

Decided to upgrade to a Intel Pentium duo core E5200 (73$) and over clock it to 4Ghz as many are able to do on air. Also upgrading to a P45 mobo socket 775 and CrossFire support so in the future if I wanted to upgrade my mobo it would likely be a core i7 or AMD if they come out with a better option. The point being that the mobo will last a long time.

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P ($ 114.99)
Intel Pentium DC E5200 ($72.99)
Diamond Radeon HD 4850 ($129.96)
Corsair 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 ($19.99)

All for a total of $ 337.93 + shipping after rebates

Alas it is true, much to myself and TC's disgust at AMD's handling of socket 939.

I have an MSI 7125 MoBo and I think I might be having some problems with it. Is there another (assumed better) board that can handle the same processor? This is a 939.
