So I sold my gtx 690, I paid 700 for it almost 2 years ago. I figured if I sold now I ended up getting 450 total after amazon fees, and then buy the 980 for 550. So I was just assuming that next time I upgrade whether it be a 990 or whatever, that the 100 bucks I spent I should be able to make up for by selling the 980 because the 690 will keep losing a lot of value. Plus the vram seems important and energy as well. Could always sli the 980. So anyone think that was a bad idea? Good idea?

Solution
I'd say it's a good idea for the power draw alone.
Performance-wise it's a sidegrade, but that extra VRAM may help. Add the option to SLI the 980 later down the line and the fact that the 690 is completely obsolete now that the 980 is out (so its value will indeed drop dramatically) and I'd say you did a very good thing!

Well the 690 GTX will surely smoke a single 980GTX......bad move. My 2x 770 SC's Sli annihilate the 980GTX in benchmarks, and not by a little, but by a good 25-30fps!
