Some AMD 970 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vishera CPUs

It's impossible to know what will happen to prices a day from now, a week from now, or even a month from now. I prefer the MSI cards but I would certainly get the HIS at that price. The cooler is nice with a backplate. The recent newegg reviews are poor, but I take them with a grain of salt since the people that write them are even dumber than the people that post here at THW 😛

I think these 1200RPM Cougars are similar to the stock fan in your case. The price for a 4-pack is not bad:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Case Fan: Cougar Turbine 120 (4-Pack) 60.4 CFM 120mm Fans ($24.78 @ OutletPC)
Total: $24.78

Are those fans more quiet than the sickleflows? All fans can be used for intake and exhaust right? And are you saying that I will have to constantly check the prices of the PC parts if I want a good deal? And what price point should I be satisfied with? (What the total price is)

Here are some more fan ideas. The Silverstones are good and quiet. The Bitfenix Specters are supposed to be good too.

lol yeah. I have a few templates saved on pcpartpicker for various price thresholds, but I update them regularly. Also often I buy all from 1 vendor like newegg even if it's a few bucks more expensive.

Cheap quiet -> Silverstones

Cheap high performance -> CM Sickleflows (I don't care what the haters say I <3 these)

I'd probably wait to order fans until you get everything else built. That way you can see if you like that stock fan. If you like it, then get the Cougar 4 pack :)

But isn't the stock fan only exhaust? And what are your own personal experiences with the Sickeflows? Are they loud? It says that they are 19 dpa and the silverstones are 19.7 dpa, how many silverstones do I need to outperform or match the performance of a Sickleflow?

1) yes. 2) Yes at the full speed 2000RPM they are lound because of the massive air pressure SWOOOOOOOOOSHHHHH.

19db, I could believe that with the Silverstones, but the Sickleflows would only be that quiet under ideal conditions. Put them in front of some mesh and that air pressure sound is loud!

I use the Sickleflows because I overclock and bench a lot, and when I do that I turn them up to full blast. You are gaming or doing work so you probably don't need all that so maybe get the Silverstones.

I didn't see anything good when I checked a minute ago. The good ones are pricey.

I heard that the silverstone series are more directed like a cone so it's goes to a certain spot instead of air flow, does that matter a lot?
And can you rephrase what this guy is saying about the placements of the fans?

Pros: Cheaper than competitive fans.
Includes mounting screws.
Silent when ran at full speed.
Amazing distance (can feel the air from 2 feet away).
Directional: the airflow isn't dispersed, but flows more like in a cone. Great to push air in a straight path to cool components in a specific spot.

Cons: These are meant to be mounted in an unconstricted location such as an exhaust at the top or back of your case, or even intake at the side of your case if your case allows it. I tried using it as an intake at the front of my Corsair C70. But once I put the front back on, the filter greatly restricted the airflow.

Unlike the AP121s, the 122s don't have the braiding on the cables. Also, the original 121's housing for the fan feels more solid, but the 122s feel like cheaper plastic.

Other Thoughts: Overall these are good fans. I have 2 and use them on the side of my case as intake to help cool my graphics card. They do push air in a column like flow.

One thing to note; the AP series of fans are NOT meant for high CFM airflow, but DIRECTIONAL airflow, meaning you're not going to fill your case with TONS of fresh air, but deliver air where it counts.

And what does rad, pwm, static pressure mean?

rad = radiator. Usually the radiator used in water cooling but can also mean the tower part of an air cooler.

pwm = it's digitally controlled (pulse width modulation). Usually more expensive because of the 4th wire but generally easier to fine tune these for speed/quiet.

static pressure: like if you held your hand behind it, it would be the force of the air.

^^Sickleflows are actually like that too but even more extreme pressure/air focusing.

They still make good case fans.

The one's Matt posted are nice but they are $10 so I didn't post them.

I prefer pressure over CFM/quietness for the reasons I already stated. My needs are not necessarily your needs. It seems like you just need something descent enough to move some air, affordable, and quiet.

Some people just want some badass looking fans like the Aerocool Sharks and don't care if they move air or sound like a jet, lol.

Alright, I guess I will go with the Silverstones, but I still don't know which one is more important, general airflow or directed airflow. And what does CFM mean? And I still don't understand what this guy is saying about the braids and placements of the fan "Pros: Cheaper than competitive fans.

Cubic Feet per Minute. Example: a 200mm fan has HUGE CFM, meaning it can fill or exhaust your case quite quickly, but fans like that often have lousy pressure to blow through mesh, dust filters, or radiators.

The braids are the nice looking sleeves over the wiring. That's always a plus, but often not on cheap fans.

Really I would wait to order your fans until after you build the rest. Fan prices tend to be very stable.

What's the difference between wind tunnel and gentle breeze, I just want something that can cool the entire pc quite nicely and are fairly quiet. If the silverstones can do that we can just end the conversation right now haha, I tend to get headaches after a few discussions like these

Maybe your R9 290 will be running pretty cool already, in which you might decide you need less fans, like just enough for positive case pressure. OR that 290 might be like a volcano and you decide that you are going to need some real performance fans like the sickleflows or even spend more money and get some Cooler Master Jet Flos. Also you might decide that you just love that orange stock fan and want to get all matching Cougar Vortexes, OR you might hate it!

yes

I already have a headache. This kind of stuff keeps me up at night.
