Running XP on a Dell dimension 4600. Every so often a blank Icon (looks like
a square with upper right corner bend in) appears on the desktop with only
a tilde "~" as a title. 180 kb. The "properties" are all black.

I delete it but eventually it comes back. What causes this and what is it?

It's from an Outlook Express patch and will appear whenever someone new is
added to your address book:

ISTR its a bug in one of the Microsoft updates from about 8 months ago -
can`t remember which one, or how to get rid of it though :-}

It's a MS bug whenever the user makes a change to the address book in OE.
XP--in error--saves a temp file to the desktop. There is no fix yet, I
believe.

The file can safely be deleted.

alt.comp.mainboards.abit might get a faster
response.

Lenny;
A patch many months ago caused this.
For the fix, call Microsoft for the hotfix referenced on this link:

No, 3 posters from this group provided the answer within 24 hours. OTOH,
your suggestion was not very helpful.

Thanks. That explains it. I think it's easier to just delete the file than
deal with MS.

Then you will likely have to continue deleting it as it is usually
recreated.
Call the number referenced on the link.
State you are calling about a hotfix and you will not be asked for
payment information.
