I have had trouble with my computer recently. It seems like it has been running slower than usual. When I start up any executable program it seems to take longer than it should. It seems like the processor starts to crank only after a considerable amount time, after I have tried to start up a program, before it acutally starts to process my request. (i.e. the indicator light for the processor does not become activated for some time) I have tried a defrag and it did not help at all. What kind of problem am I experienccing and how can I fix this? Thanks so much for your insight.

Interesting. What I would first like to know is where this cpu/processor indicator light is. If its one of the ones on the front it is more then likely the harddrive indicator light.
Things to check.
-Have you screwed around in the BIOS at all - yes -
set back to default.
-are you running any active virus scanners or
loaded any other programs that may be running in the
back ground.
- is your hd getting full -- should be a warning
- is your hd set to suspend too soon
- is your HD partition fat16 or 32

If all else fails, wipe the drive and reload.

Take Care.
If money was no object, how could you spend it!

I would agree w/ what Crazy_mck said to do….I would also try checking out your hard drive manufacturer's web site for diagnostic tools to check you hard drive….If you are running window try getting a copy of Fix-it Utilities… There are some good diagnostic tools in there…..

If all else fails, I would just reformat and just start over…….

Also you might check to see how many programs are running in the background. If you have installed any software lately they might be running in the background and be a resource hog. when your computer is started and assuming your running win95 or above hit ctrl-alt-del 1 time and when the window pops up see how many programs are running.
If there are alot end some of the task and see if that dosent speed it up a bit.

If the fat lady's singing at least shes losing weight.

I agree with what everyone has said above. We could probably be more helpful if you post more details:
Does this happen with all programs? Try something simple like solitare--same problem?
Have you run scandisk? Try the thorough setting.
You can run msconfig and disable all your startup programs.
How old is your system? Operating system decay is real and you may have to reinstall your OS.

You might have a program running in the background. Go to c:\windows\recent - delet all files in the recent directory. Go to c:\windows\temp - delet all files there. Delet all internet cache files. then run defrag again. Check your bios settings. If this does not help. you should reload. reloading is common with windows. if that does not help you might have a hardware problem. Also disable all power saving features. Like hard drive power down.

first off, we need more info to give advice accurately.
what operating system? Windows 98? ME? 2000? NT? Linux?
how much memory?
what processor?
and what brand/model computer is it?
I have actually seen computers with a processor light guys... ok, servers, but I imagine somewhere a desktop has one...

I have found that the longer you run windows ( days wise ), and the more crap u have installed...the slower your PC. A slow or full hard drive will crawl. My moto is to reformat every 3-4 months. Keeps me running as fast as possible. You might want to try the same.
