Question Sony dvd rw drive

Hi, I have a Sony vaio vgn-nr38m laptop with an internal standard dvd rw drive.
It reads bought cds and dvds no problem, but if I put blank discs, or discs I have burnt in I just get "please insert a disc into drive d" error message. Have tried the discs in question on other machines with no problems, and as the drive reads bought discs doesn't seem to be a hardware problem.
Anyone have any ideas?

I have tried several different dvds and cds of different makes, both new and pre-burnt and it won't read any- so don't think it's a case of just being fussy...
