The only reason why the PS2 was in production / supported for so long was because Sony's plan for the PS3 to be fully "backwards compatible" through software didn't work out.

The first 60GB PS3s had the PS2 chipset built into it for backwards compatibility, then the first 80GB model removed most of the PS2 chipset save for 2 vector processors with mostly software emulation for backwards compatibility. After trying to fix the software emulation issues through firmware updates Sony realized that it would never be 100% backwards compatible due to certain games being coded in a non-standard PS2 fashion. This is why every PS2 game going into development after 2008 had to be coded in specific way to ensure compatibility with PS2 software emulation on PS3s. Eventually, Sony gave up on PS2 software emulation altogether and decided to continue PS2 production so long as there was enough demand.

I should note that it's very likely the PS4 will not be backwards compatible with either PS2 or PS3 games. Original PS games are already being ported to other platforms and should be available to the PS4 when it finally comes out.

You guys are way out of your head if you think Sony is going to deliver such a powerful console. If you look at this generation console race you'll see that Nintendo made the most profit selling their console since they weren't loosing money with Wii bing sold unlike Sony and Microsoft. Sony literally lost billions with the PS3 and that hurt the company a lot so no we will not get some vastly superior console. I am almost certain that Sony will be the last to release their console and that if it is superior to the new console from Microsoft it will be just at a minimum so they can have bragging rights. The same goes for Microsoft they will not deliver stellar performance, they learned hard on this current generation that horse power does not sell the most.

Both console will definitely be better than the WiiU but their main goal on the next generation will be to make a profit with each console they sell.

[citation][nom]alidan[/nom]you are not taking into account they they were willing to lose 400-500$ a system on the ps3 when it came out, and if things didn't go the way of people being ok with digital download movies, it would have payed off for sony FAR bigger than it did. a ram disc for the ps3 with 0 load time would take 24gb, sure there are some titles like metal gear solid 4 that use a whole 50gb disc without movies takeing it up, but all that could easily be loaded in and out of the disc. 24gb of ram right now costs about 130$your 2 64gb drive in raid may work... but i dont think they would do that over 1 drive, less fail points. either way both options could happen. i like the 256gb ssd though, get all the game stuff installed on it from disc, and the only reason the disc is even in the drive anymore is for sound, video, and drm. i mean i play grand turismo and forza 4, and if those were the only 2 games i play, i would totally be willing to shell out for an ssd for those games alone... good god every 5 minutes right now its another load time... granted forza 4s load time isnt bad, but GT... jesus, 30+ seconds for some of them, even when i have the game installed. also with the ssd. how much do you think they are over priced? i cant find any data on the chips themselves, so i cant come up with numbers, but unless they are selling them to us at cost, those 2 64gb ssds may cost ALLOT less than you are thinking. that 100$ you ahve set aside, could put a 3rd or a 4th depending on how much they raise the price... because sony wont sell the system for a profit, they will do it at cost, or below cost.[/citation]

Sony is on the ropes financially, they can't afford those loses again.

the only part of their company that is really profitable is their gaming division, so much so that its the part that holds the rest of the company up.

they want/need the hard core gamer, and the way to get them is to make their games better, either in looks or in how the games play (loading and such)

granted they probably wont take a 400-500$ loss again, but a 1-200$ loss to make damn sure that they are in every home... the fact that ssd really, right now cost allot, but i could see a 256gb drive being around 50cents per gig by christmass they wont eat a loss for long, not like the ps3 where half way through the life is when that thing stopped taking a loss.

you have to look at it like this.

if they both use off the shelf parts, and if microsoft is willing to take a loss, than ps4 will not have the gamers who don't get systems for exclusives alone...

sony HAS to pack as much in as they can afford to take a loss on, and a ssd could really make games feel like they are loading instantly, expecially if they give the thing 4gb of system ram, load up a full 2gb of the game that you are playing right now, and load up the next segment of 2gb for the next area.

load times are really the only part of console gaming that lags behind pc in such a profound way anymore.
ill preface that statement with i don't give a damn about better graphics as a whole, i dont need every game to top each other over and over again to enjoy them.

You guys fail to remember a few things:
1: The ps3 failed to bring in the profit Sony expected and they took a massive loss over the years because of it, leading to layoffs. They also refused to drop the price of older ps3 models when the new superslim came out in September because they had such a big loss from the ps3.

2: You guys are pricing everything based on your CONSUMER prices not bulk wholesale prices that Sony would be getting. Other than the newer cpu/video card, expect cheaper bluray/3d drive, ram sets and hard disc drives in the first ps4 models. Sony can't afford to take massive losses again for a console. The ps vita was made cheaply and expect the trend to continue. The only reason why Sony took a loss when ps3 came out was because Bluray technology was still new and instead of getting $999.99 for just the player itself, you got the console for$400.00 less. The tech is much cheaper now and so therefore Sony will be able to buy cheaper parts for their ps4.

Almost don't expect ps3's to last 2 years after the release of the ps4. Many people are refusing to buy ps4 due to the program that will blacklist "used" software only allowing them to be tied to one account. People will still be buying ps3 system and games instead of buying the ps4 until Sony stops development of the ps3 and closes many of the servers in an act to force gamers to buy ps4's which idiots will eventually cave.

Watch everything I wrote will come true....don't bitch now come back two years after the release of ps4 and write something then.

I already addressed that the PlayStation 3 took a long time start seeing profit, which are failing to take into account what Sony has to do to make the PlayStation for THE system to have.

Pretty much every section is Sony is taking a loss at this time I believe, at least if I remember correctly, besides the gaming section. If Sony doesn't take a loss on the PlayStation 4 it will fail almost regardless of what happens.

There is a chance that Microsoft is going to pull out of gaming and only release a slightly more powerful next Xbox, something that might bring the current quality of games but be able plan at 1080 P, if Microsoft only does that Sony might have a chance. But if Microsoft was going to take a 200 loss on about $400 system, and PlayStation isn't going to take a loss on a $500 system, they are effectively screwed.

Now I'm also taking out the account that they have a DRM scheme that might make use games unplayable as that has been proved to be inside the system but it is a cause for concern that they patented. If that is a system I don't care how powerful the PlayStation 4 is ill fail, they can give me an actual supercomputer $100 and if they had it so I couldn't buy a used game I would buy it.

Why would Microsoft, who has far deeper pockets at this point let Sony off the ropes? I'm sure their analysts know they could kill the PS4 by cutting prices and taking a loss longer than Sony can.

because microsoft stopped caring about videogames.

sony still gets exclusives, sony still puts out great first party, and microsoft seams to want to make there consoles the equivalent of a cable box, but over the internet.

i can see microsoft coming out with something that makes profit off the hardware alone, and just does current gaming graphic levels, but hd, make their 360 also a dvr, and with live you get the guide function (like tivo) and try to go mass market like that.

if microsoft really wanted to secure gaming, they would shell out for the exclusives that would force us to get their system... but they just aren't... there's halo... but that isnt much... its a fps with a controller. there was gears of war... is that still exclusive...

meanwhile at the last 3 sony press conference they packed theirs with exclusive games, while microsoft just wanted to tell you that sbox live will cost 10$ more a month because of an espn deal.

really, this console generation could be won within the next 4 months, because i could seriously see microdoft just giving an incremental update and profit off the inital purchase and nothing substantial, if sony takes even a 100$ loss on every console they will win, not could, will.

more or less, i could see microsoft chasing the casual gamer, pushing kinect, more than i could see them give a damn about the hard core market any more. to them gamers are just a market segment they try to exploit with direct x iterations anymore.

sony has to pack their system just because of the off chance Microsoft will too.
