Sound card in a Dimension 2400?

I'd like to apologise if this question has been asked and answered
before, but I looked and couldn't find it. If it has, please direct
me to the relevant place. Thanks.

OK, this is what I want to do: I'm thinking of putting a PCI sound
card into my Dimension 2400. Nothing too fancy, I'll only be using it
for stereo use. My question is this: will I be able to connect this
sound card to the headphone socket at the front of the case? This is
very useful and I'd be loathe to lose it.

If anyone knows a definitive answer to this, I'd appreciate knowing
it. If it is possible, recommendations as to which sound card to get
would be useful too. Thanks.

If it is a retail (3rd party card), no. Or at least not w/o some pinout
diagrams and serious re-wiring.

What you're looking for is either a DELL SPECIFIC SBLive! value card 5.1 or
Audigy card with firewire port.

Sorry, this link is in french, I believe: http://membres.lycos.fr/sbdell/ .
Scroll down and you'll find a photo of the card. The "problem" connector
resides at the top of the photo around 11 o'clock. It is the white, long
connect next to the green modem voice connector. This is the plugin that is
missing from retail cards and is apparently exclusive to Dell machines. It
is where you'll plug your front headphone cable inside the system (currently
plugged to your motherboard).

Another option would be to get a retail card and plug your headphones into
your speakers, if they have a jack.

I'm not sure what Dell asks for their SBLive! value card (Dell P/N 0R533).
You could call and ask: Dell Spare Parts Phone 800-999-3355 Ext 69937.

As a side note, the difference in sound quality with the "value" card
probably won't be perceptible, imo.

Stew already answered the question, but the deeper question is WHY? The
integrated sound is quite good. What feature of a 'better' card are you
looking for?

Tom,

And that's a good point. I have two SBLive! cards; one is the Dell OEM (in
our Dim4100) and the other is "retail" OEM that I bought for a homebuilt.
The down sound in the homebuilt sounds, to me, every bit as good as the
value card though it does have a couple extra I/O jacks (digital, line in?)
and a game port.

My Dimension 2300 supposedly has a 200 watt power supply. I've had an ATI
9100 PCI video card in place for a year that requires a 250 watt supply. My
machine also has two hard drives although it is only designed for one and
have my usb printer/scanner, usb optical mouse, and usb memory card reader
in place at all times. I have no problems.

Tom, Stew:

The technology for high quality sound reproduction was pretty much perfected
long ago (for all but the real audio enthusiast). It seems to me that high
end sound cards are now marketed on their ability to manipulate sounds (as
in DSP, for example) or to synthesize sound.
