sound issue - system 9

I have a Williams Sorcerer systems 9 game. It worked
for one game. The second game (the second 'power on') the volume was cut in
half. Using science, I determined flicking the power switch on and off
several times may clear up the issue. 🙂

Now the sounds/speech are at extremely low levels. While runnig the sound
test via the diagnostics, you cannot hear the sounds unless my ear is right
against the speaker. There is no electrical hum - nothing. Just some very,
very faint sounds.

I've played with (without replacing) the volume pots on both the coin door
and sound bought. Again using the most advanced scientific method known to
me, I've diddled with the connectors, wiring, EPROMS, etc....

I have not yet started replacing any components. I wanted to solict some
advice first. Any help would be
apprecited in diagnosing the problem.

Thanks,
Bill

There are two pots that control the sound in a System 9 machine.

One sets the speech/sound balance, and is located on the speech board.
It does not sound like this is your problem.

The second is a pot inside the cabinet on the left wall. Does the
sound volume change when you turn this? Only the game play volume
changes. The attract mode volume does not change.

I'm rebuilding a Sorcerer for a friend. Maybe it is a SYS 9 issue,
maybe it's spcific to this game, or these apriticular components, but I
have found that this game has two volumes, nearly silent and
EARSPLITTING. Adjust your pots carefully.

Cheers!!

hi - thanks for the reply.

I have messed with both pots - the one on the sounds card and the one within
the cabinet. I have do so during an active game, during attract mode, and
also during diagnostics. The volume does not change at all. Its very
faint, barely audible without change at all times. There isn't ven an
electrical hum or "cracking" as generated by a dirty pot.

Still not sure....

bad chip?

I'm curious how this turns out. My Space Shuttle before the power supply
(maybe a cap) went, the speech was barely audible. Sound worked though.

Not sure, but I would a bad ROM would omit certain speech, but have no
effect on the volume.

I don't have immediate access to an EPROM burner... but I will take it into
consideration if no other good leads arise. I have some friends that can
burn chips for me.

Thanks,
Bill

I looked at it. It seems fine, with cone intact and wires attached.

Thanks Edward (and everyone). I'll have to find a replacement part and do
some soldering...

If the volume pots and the speaker are ok usually one MC1458 op amp on the speech
board is dead. You might want to replace both.
