Speakers have sound, but give no control. Driver issue?

I have a Windows 7 64 bit edition installed on a system in my house that recently began having strange sound issues. There is a 2 speak/1 sub-woofer setup for the sound for the computer. The sound is onboard by realtek and the motherboard is a P8B75V Asus.

The basis of the issue is not a lack of sound, but instead a lack of control to the sound. The speakers produce sound and have absolutely no effect when being adjust by volume via the knobs. Sound can be turned down or off from windows and or realtek software, but not the speakers.

I have made certain the realtek drivers are up to date for the system as it has just been rebuilt after a hard drive failure. I have already gone through device manager and uinstalled the sound device manually and manaually installed the drivers. I also let the driver installer do its own task at installing using the same method as before.

For a brief moment I was able to restore normality to the system's speakers. Using the methods described above, but it returned back to the old issue again after about day arbitrarily.

So to restate the issue, I have sound, I have made sure the sound driver is up to date, and I have made sure the speakers/cords/cables are all connected properly. Note, the sound issues began BEFORE the hard drive failure and not after it.

Any ideas of what to do would be great. I genuinely have no ideas left and web surfing for several days has yielded me very little things to even try (including here). If you have any questions I will answer them as needed too.

Thank you.

The hardware volume control knob on the speakers has nothing to do with Windows or the audio drivers. It works independently of the volume level adjustment in Windows.

I reckon it's a faulty volume control knob on your speaker set.

Well they are a set of very old Altec Lansing speakers. 10+ years minimum I would estimate so that seems a reasonable answer.

How positive are you about that judgement? I just want to be sure I have exhausted all options and buy new speakers.
