This has probly been posted but it relly helped on my 3d mark scores and converting video. It will speed most everything else up also.
Hit ctrl+alt+del, click on the processes tab then right click on the program you want to speed up go down to set priority and click on high. It helped me so it might help you all too.

If you ever stop learning, YOU'ER DEAD!!

Stick with "above normal". High can actually slow things down in certain circumstances. If you want to have some real fun, set it to realtime heh. Don't worry, everything resets itself after the reboot.

You can also use this trick to run a dedicated quake server on the same box you are playing on. Just have two instances of quake going and set the server's priority to above normal. Players connecting via the net won't experience any slowdown due to your rendering.

It's kinda cheating for benchmarking purposes though.

Oh yeah...if you want something to start in a higher priority rather than having to do it manually, just edit your shortcuts to make use of the nt/2k/xp command "start" (check ya helpfiles for more info)

:)

Seti will use as much of your cpu as it can get. Normally, it's priority is set to low, so it's the last to get cycles. But, if you set it to realtime, it'll completely overrun your cpu, not even allowing cycles for your kernel

pretty much anything will lockup if you set it to realtime. Microsoft word for instance...it needs other processes to do the actual I/O to the disk. Set it to realtime and nothing gets written and word (in realtime) keeps waiting for it.

Is it possible to set the priority higher in Win98, too?

I know some progs like WinAmp and MPEG Suite have built-in priority settings, but what about for other progs?

Yes, you can. I had a process manager for winME (VERY useful there, as you can kill locked apps much easier than ctrl+alt+del). I can't remember the url to it, but look at downloads.com, tweakfiles.com, and such...
