I still have the original game, which works perfectly on a modern PC with the aid of a launcher and a couple of patches. Still, I was seriously considering this version until I read about it utilizing SecuROM. They should have just released it DRM-free on GOG. Thanks for nothing, SE.

FFXIII was terrible.

Went into it expecting open FFXII-like areas and got tunnels, annoying characters and linear gameplay: complete bollocks & waste of my precious money.

I'd love to replay FFVII with new graphics, it makes the whole experience more inmersive and relatable. At least IMHO.

Cheers

this was already released back in 98, my friend had it and was playing it. i asked him what emulator he was using to play it he said it was a direct pc release.

[citation][nom]Pinhedd[/nom]I still play Doom and Doom II with the original graphics because that's how they were made. There's a certain quality to the art that just ages well[/citation]
really now....wake up and smell the roses...

[citation][nom]jamesedgeuk2000[/nom]"So far, there's still no word on an actual release date for Final Fantasy VII on PC."It was 1998[/citation]

I still have my original copy of it. I should install it on my PC and see if it still works.

[citation][nom]heroictofu[/nom]I'm going to disagree with this one, having just played through all of FFXIII. Sucks? No. Different? Very. Amazing story? Definitely. The linearity is both a blessing and a curse. Honestly, I found it to be refreshing. Exploration is awesome most of the time, but sometimes it can distract from the story at hand. Many times have I become so involved in side stories and side quests that I eventually lost focus and got bored with the core gameplay. *shrug* And there -are- open areas in the game, you just have to get there.[/citation]

if you can get into the story, ok, ill give you that.
i played to about 8 or 10 hours into the game, was never told there was a codex, and the whole time i was still wondering wtf more often than not
than given that i cant chose my party, im forced to use characters i hate, and i cant make my own group, im forced to play the game in ways i hate.
i had battles with trash mobs last over 10 minutes, because i wanted a healer in the group instead of a magic fighter... so a 10 minute battle, which i cant lose, and i actually just played by going autopilot, as you can only control 1 character at a time, i cant remember, but i was only pressing x for 10 minutes while watching tv and moved back over to the game only to see if the fight was done.
you are also given no levels, or possibly a really shoddy leveling system, which i believe to be the worst in seriese history, possibly only eclipsed by 10, in which i screwed leveling up so bad i couldn't finish the game without extreme grinding.

so im 10 hours in, i don't like most of the characters, and i despise that boy who is so VERY whiney. i hated the flash back, i hated most of the damned story because it explained NOTHING to that point. seriously, i didnt know there was a codex, but even than, i SHOULD NOT HAVE TO READ A CODEX TO UNDERSTAND THE STORY, it should only be used as extra information, it shouldn't be i hear something, go to codex for a page or two description.

had i known of the codex, i MAY have enjoyed the game enough to get to the 20 or 30 hour mark, you know, how long you have to play the game before most people tell you thats where it really picks up, half way through or 3/4ths of the way though the game till it gets good.

remember i'm not discounting that you enjoyed it, im sure it was possible if you could put up with all the crap TO that point, but i couldn't... i just didn't care after i think the motorcycle summons... seriously hated those fights more than any other aspect of the game and that says something.

ok, i wrote all that with only reading the first sentence of your post.

please, linear story i can deal with, a game pushing you from behind to move forward, i can deal with, a game giving you next to no reason to explore, i can deal with, 3/4ths of the game giving you a long hallway to run down, with enemies you can see, but still need to go into a battle mode load, that was annoying, knowing that there is noting to do but run forward. it was the most pathetic excuse for game design i have seen in the modern 3d era.

mix that with a horrific combat system, that is wholey disappointing, giving you little to no control, and no feeling of reward or risk for anything because you go into combat maxed, you come out heavily damaged, but you go back into combat, maxed again, and with a no leveling system, i dont even get the satisfaction of even getting stronger, its taken away from me for god knows the reason.

when the game launched in japan, it cost i believe 90-120$ for standard.
1-2 week later, it was 5$... and there is a GOOD reason for that.

again, im not discrediting that you liked it, im sure there is story to like if you can wade through the crap that is every other aspect of that game.

There is actually still hope that there will be a graphical overhaul. For one, this screenshot is obviously not from the new game, as this article states that there is not even an official mention of the re-relase. Therefore, how would anyone have as much as a screenshot from it? Secondly, Squaresoft (or Square-Enix) already knows that FF7 was released on the PC.

If the people who bought the game actually downloaded all the files, it wouldn't be hard to crack it for immediately play... upload it to TPB and let the games begin, damn you! Actually - if they give the game an HD update, I would gladly pay 13 bucks for it. I wish they would add voice-overs too, but that would obviously be too "radical" for the amount of nostalgia everyone has for it.

Here is a reason why this might not be an HD remake/update: the company stated in an interview I read (forgot where - maybe Game Informer?) that they are unwilling to remake it (for PS3 at least) because it has been their biggest achievement since it was originally released, and that they don't want to make all their newer games pale in comparison for another couple decades. They don't seem to be trying very hard at topping it, though. Ever since FFX, they seem to have been trying to make nothing but money from the damned games, and not worrying about quality. Gone are the days of 10/10 Squaresoft releases. =(

actually, the reason they wont remake ff7 is because they are incompetent. they have been in interviews saying that they would require hundreds of millions of dollars to remake the game, and that was after converted from yen.

they went on to say that the reason that ff13 doesn't have open areas is because its to hard to program.

square enix is a shell of its former self, and all the real talent either left, or couldn't adapt from the ps1 era to the ps3.

that said, don't hold your breath on any kind of graphics overhaul besides support for today's hardware, and high resolution screens.

Looks like someone was able to work around the SecuROM "error". Patches are on bittorrent!

[citation][nom]alidan[/nom]probably because 13 sucked, and would never make back the money it would take to port.[/citation]

FF13 definitely did NOT suck.

[citation][nom]spectrewind[/nom]FF13 definitely did NOT suck.[/citation]

go up a few posts, i put exactly why it sucked.

i also concede that if you can look past all the crap they did wrong and all the bad decisions and game play, that the story may be good, and may be a redeeming feature, but i have been quoted that you have to play the game 30 hours just to get to the good parts of the game and that was from FANS of the game...

The original FF7PC sucked big time as far as video card compatibility was concerned, in large part due to using palette-based glow animations at a time where many GPUs did not support that feature and MS had flagged it as an obsolete DirectX feature.

Wonder if people with the original FF7PC box/CDs are eligible for a discount on that download remake... I think I still have everything in a box somewhere. It had better work and look better than the original.

for me it was the opening fmv that killed the game for me, i had to get a save that took place after it, and through patches, the fmv sections became a 1 in 4 chance to crash the game outright.

[citation][nom]dark_lord69[/nom]I'm I the only person that knows that this was ALREADY released on pc? Doesn't that mean you should still be able to get it right now and that looking for a re-release date is stupid?lolhttp://www.ebay.com/itm/Final-Fant [...] 257444f227My friend had it years ago.Perhaps I'd be excited if it was a remake with better graphics and such.[/citation]
the re release is recoded to play nice with current oses and hardware. the origioal was hard to get to work even on hardware at the time, much less new hardware today.
