Ssd for gaming system?

hi guys,

I've got what I think is a pretty high end gaming system. A friend of mine suggested to top it off, I should upgrade the hard drive to ssd from what I currently have a 7200rpm sata 1tb drive..

other than loading and booting will this effect gaming at all? is it a worthwhile investment?

so far ive got
i7 950
12 gig ram
dual 5970
asus pt6 deluxe v2 board..

Builder, I don't have a 5970 quadfire setup. I do however a a 5870 Trifire setup, and I bought a SSD. I guess according to you, that makes me an idiot.

I am currently running at 2560*1600 or 5760*1200 for games. I can't max I think EVERYTHING except crysis at that level (although I must say that even going to 8XAA I can't tell much difference visually at 2560 than with no AA enabled.)
AS for your "nobody wants 4xAA" I know that you're not playing everything with 16xAA with your 4870.

Exactly, I don't "want" to play with 4AA, But I have to due to my low end card.

And yes, if you have a 5870 Trifire, then it's fine that you bought an SSD.

But anything slower than a 5970 (or even a 5970 quadfire/5870 tri), and any other gamer would be a moron to buy a SSD.

Are you a gamer ? Are you a moron , if you spend any money on your rig if it does not get you more gpu power ? Or are you something less than a 'gamer'? Give it up. Why do you have 8gigs of ram ? lets extrapolate that out. Why ? Thats dumb, moronic. Sell 4 gigs on ebay and your current card and upgrade your gpu. < Your logic.

I have 8GB of ram becuase it came with my goddamn rig, wich my freind in computer wholesaling sold me.

I didn't realy have a say in how much RAM I got, and if you want to buy my RAM, go for it, I only need 4gb.

It does not matter how much GPU power you got, ssd is improving OS and load performence not FPS it wont give you 10 or 5 extra FPS. Graphics are loaded from the SSD to the the GPU when you load the game so its only the loading not FPS.
But thers some logic that people who have such powerfull videocards can afford SSDs.

btw Cat 10.3 just came out, I had 10.3a which are the same but not signed so no need to reinstall.

I'd just get another one of your current drives and stick em in raid 0, one of those intel X25 80gb drives here are €210 before shipping, and that's a cheap place whereas you could just buy 2 large capacity hard drives and raid 0 them and still walk away with a spare 60 quid 😀 either with a SSD or a raid 0 config you won't notice a difference between the two, not in games anyway.

Thats Exactly my previous point ssd vs Raid0, you simply cant compare them, I am talking about exp. with my 3x500Gb single plater raid0 with one hard drive failure. SSD will beat 100 HDs in Raid0 -->Yes Why? Access time is 140x faster, ~14ms Vs 0.1ms,
also, an SSD will give you a Stable let say 200mbps while a Raid0 setup would dip into the 60-70s mbps not a stable 200mbps. Also finally, Raid0 hd has much more risk of failing than a single ssd or ssd raid0. If I had extra money I would get an SSD.
SSDs are already shipping with a 10 year warranty lmao

Well if you just intall games, 160 is more than enough, let say 6Gb/game , reserve 18Gb for OS, that let you install 25 Games of 6Gb, not a lot of people here have time to play 25 games lmao. A 160Gb SSD is not 4K$ lol more like 400$. 160Gb SSD OS partition, 2Tb for 1080p Videos and Backups, music ...

Ya I was going to name GTA(14Gb) lol but I m talking about the majority of games uses <10Gb
And btw SSD are better for FPS games where loading and lagging are much more improtant factors. GTA is CPU limited and badly coded lmao , I would put FPS games on the SSD like Crysis and Stalker, Bad Company 2,CS:S, others all on the 2Tb.

Congrats, but it all depends on personal preference...I for one would take a 40GB SSD vs 10TB of space...any day. I just don't need all that space. For me its Speed>Space.

5TB of really slow storage vs a 160GB of 100000x faster storage.

Well, The majority of gamers use more than 160GB, So unless you want to spend 4K$, you need to buy an HDD to go with the SSD.

you must be famous, you must know all the tens of millions of gamers around the united states and even the globe to make such conclusion. Moreover, how exactly do you define the opinionated definition of "Gamer"...I play a computer game every now then maybe once or twice a week for 20minutes...Crysis for its awsome graphics to look at....but is there an exact definition to this.

A lot of games take up 20GB.

A lot, more and more are using a lot of space but the majority of games which includes the most popular are far less then that.

NAME ME 1 OS THAT USES 30GB.......Windows XP is like 5GB, windows vista is also i believe under 10GB, and Windows 7 isn't even 8GB.

Maybe some NASA super computer OS uses 30GB lolz.

I agree you'd need a solid 30GB for the OS & Swap file. A 60GB SSD could fill up entirely with only 3 or 4 games and Windows Vista or Windows 7 installed on it. BFBC2 takes a solid 11GB. Dragon Age: Origins is like 14GB without mods installed. You already mentioned GTAIV. You actually couldn't install all 3 of them on an SSD that also has Vista or Win7 on it. There wouldn't be enough room.

2. Good games are games that are fun to play.

3. My Vista Install (and essential files like drivers) is it 30GB+ right now.

4. And yes, I have the OS/Drivers on a dedicated partition.

You guys cannot argue subjective points.

This post was originally whether to buy a SSD for a high end gaming rig.

SSD are EXPENSIVE! Yes, stupid expensive. But they are also Stupid fast. Which makes it worth it if you can afford it.

I don't know anyone that uses their PC just for gaming. But yes, IN game, you will NOT get any framerate do to the ssd.

Everything, however, WILL load noticably faster than with any hdd, and will make it feel "snappier and quicker".

everything else is subjective (as to why you would buy one, or wouldn't)

Please remember that the purpose of these threads is really to volunteer our knowledge and experience to others seeking advice.

Almost every view in this thread is correct, but does little to help the OP, nor is it going to prove a point or convince someone else that they need more storage over speed, or vice versa. We are all enthusiast here, we all have knowledge to share, and a lot to learn.

Okay so i looked around and seems like the samsung F3 7200rpm 500gb/1tb is the fastest HDD out there with the most amazing access times/transfer rates. Well most websites say its around 13-13.6ms. The Intel X25-M 80GB like the one I have has a .085 access time or something like that, its what i found on the internet, if its wrong i'll download something to test mine.

Anyway 13/.085=153.94117. Thats an access time of 153 times faster. Sorry for the exageration lolz, but its still quite of a difference. 153 times...15,294% faster. Thats pretty damn fast, big difference. I'll have to personally bench my SSD for more accurate results incase my sources are wrong which i doubt (toms' hardware).

Your vista install....i am sure you already included drivers, hib file, pagefile...etc. Thats no the OS. The actual OS is smaller. My win7 would be be 20GB+ if i had a pagefile and hib file, because i have 6GB's of ram. You should be more specific.

Right, I just feel that the push to enter SSDs into the mainstream sub 2k$ build is a futile and flawed one, and only builds 2K$+ should have an SSD.

(X25-V=Fail)

Here's my official position:

If you have 2k$+ for a gaming build, an SSD may be a good choice, depending on you.

If you have less than 2k$ for a gaming build, spending money on a SSD would be a gross misuse of very limited funds.

EDIT: Just the OS is 25Gb+ When I threw the drivers and other essentail files you can't live without, it became 30Gb+.

(vista ulti is real big)

Oh my mistake, i was only comparing the home version, my mistake, sorry dude. I completely forgot about that. But windows 7 home premium x64 is under 8GB when installed (the actual raw OS).

And your official position as is right now is fine. I was just against some ridiculous conclusions and opinions you had before thats all :)

All right, Thanks for educating me.

It's nice when debates can be civilly resolved, without screaming and name calling, and both sides can reach a consensus :)

It just kinds pisses me of when some people post threads about how fast their new boot time is, and how they are a supier human being and everyone want's to touch thier dick.

(A guy a day ago posted one of those threads, and he had a 500$ SSD, and a 125$ CPU, and thought he had a "High end" build, And he also tried to tell me the i3 530 beats the 965 and the QX9700)
