SSD for gaming?

I have built several gaming computers in the past 6 years but until now I have used HDD's. I am looking into buying a SSD within the week but I am not sure which SSD to buy. Currently I am looking at a 850 EVO 1tb and a 860 PRO 500Gb. For gaming/programming in visual (what I primarily do) is it needed for the tb or can I just get a 500 and that will suffice. I currently am using a 2tb HDD and am only using like 600gb of that. Is it worth the speed of the 850 pro to downgrade to only 500gb? Also, what about a 960 EVO PCI-E? What are your guys' opinions on my situation?

Nvme and M.2 is usually faster. You can take a 500 GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD. Keep important files and stuff you currently need on the 500 gigs and the rest on the 1 TB. Otherwise, you can move everything over to the 1 TB SSD. However, i have had a couple of SSD's give on me after 3 or 4 years, like my 250 GB SSD I got in 2012 end gave out 2016 beginning, so consider that.

The M.2 NVME drives are the fastest, and lead to some impressive system bootup and shutdown times, but, contribute next to nothing to game performance over an ordinary SSD. (if game framerates and level loading times are identical, I call that 'contributing nothing')

If you have the extra $100 or so, great, get a 960 EVO; if money is tight, devote that $100 towards an 850 EVO and a better GPU. (God knows, with today's GPU prices, you'll need it!)

I already have a PC. I built it about a year ago now. I have a i76700k, 1080FTW, 16gb gskill 2133, and a sabertooth z170s MOBO. Money is not an issue, I think I have decided to get a 960 pro instead of the EVO. Thanks for the help!
