So im trying to install an SSD in my pc, its showing up in the bios but i can never get it to show up in the windows disk management (the SSD isnt new, i got it from a friend). I tried unplugging my hard drive and then installing windows on the ssd using the usb recovery method. I got it installed but when i looked into the disk management again, the hard drive was missing. To sum it up: when i boot from my hard drive there is no ssd in windows, but when i boot from my ssd there is no hard drive in windows.

Motherboard: ASrock h81m-dgs
Hard drive: toshiba 512GB (dont know the specific model)
SSD: toshiba 128GB (again, i dont know the model)

Running windows 10 home 64-bit

Solution
Yes, there is speed difference. But it's for SSD only.
SATA2 limits data transfers to ~ 300MB/s. While mechanical hard drive can never reach such speeds, SSD can reach up to 550MB/s. Startup times will not be affected by much. It impacts sequential data transfer rates mainly.

Did you try connecting SSD to sata_0/sata_1 and HDD to sata_2/sata_3 ports?
No errors or messages at all during boot up?

Not sure, of course, about what procedure you used with respect to "usb recovery method". It may have included some error of omission or commission.

And there is always the chance for you to make a mistake especially if the instructions/guidelines are not well written.

Read the following link:

https://www.howtogeek.com/193669/whats-the-difference-between-gpt-and-mbr-when-partitioning-a-drive/

Then look for two or three other "recovery" procedures. Compare the procedures and you may discover some missing part or other inconsistency that may be the basis for the missing drive.

No, i didnt get any error message during boot up.
What i mean with usb recovery method : I used a previously created windows 10 recovery USB drive that installs windows on your pc when something goes wrong or you just dont have windows, just like a system repair disc.

The link you sent doesnt help as my actual problem is that the 2 drives wont show up together in the disk management. The only one that shows up is the 1 that i boot from and they both seem to work fine on their own.

I would try switching SATA ports on the motherboard and using a different SATA cable for starters. If that doesn't work, then I'd remove the drive and test it as an external drive through a SATA to USB adapter (they are pretty cheap to buy, and always handy). The fact that BIOS sees both drives but Windows does not leads me to believe it may be a bad SSD if you don't have a bad SATA motherboard port or cable. I did have a dead SATA port on one of my old ASUS builds and had to switch ports. I am assuming both are SATA drives and that SSD is not an M.2 variant because as the other guy said here, that could be your issue.

I tried switching the ports
I tried switching the cable
Both drives work in both ports but never together, the only accessible one is the boot drive (that i choose in the bios)

I am confused by what you said. My motherboard has 4 SATA ports, 2 of them are SATA 3 and the other 2 are SATA 2. Previously i had an optical drive in the port labeled SATA 0 and my HDD in the port labeled SATA 1. That worked fine, but now that i unplugged my optical drive and tried using the ssd in its place they wont work together, only the boot drive shows up in windows while both are in the bios.

Okay I'd try this: set your boot priority in BIOS to the drive you want to be your priority drive with the other drive as second priority then boot into Windows. Then power down and unplug the SATA cable from the drive not showing up in Windows device manager (leaving the wider SATA power cable still connected to it). Then boot back up into Windows and reconnect the SATA cable to the drive. See if Windows picks it up as a new drive. If that doesn't work, I am at an entire loss.

Is it really fine to plug it in while the pc is powered up? Id hate to loose my hdd as i still really need it

Yes because the power adapter was never unplugged. You are just plugging in the communication back like you would a USB thumb drive when the PC is powered up. In any event, try running through this tutorial if all else fails.

Its not there sadly

Im pretty much losing hope at this point, no it didnt work :/

Showing hidden devices makes the hard drive appear twice, there is a TOSHIBA Transmemory USB device and a Generic flash disk USB device, so no ssd there. Unless im looking at the wrong spots i dont see any error messages. (scanning seems to do nothing aswell)

I tried two methods to switch between drives:
1- boot priority in bios
2- switching the cable/port

i tested multiple cables but that doesnt seem to be the issue

So youre saying that i should plug my non OS booting drive into a SATA 2 port while the OS booting disk and another cable are connected to the SATA 3 ports?
Also, wouldnt i need a different cable for SATA 2 or are they universal?

As i already said, yes, both methods work but i can only use one at a time for some reason.
