Hi all, I have a notebook with built-in 1TB IDE drive (7200). I also use an SSD attached through USB3.0 port. I was wondering which one will be faster, ie. where should I install games? Thx to all/anyone. L.

Solution
This would depend what SATA interface your laptop has, as the SATA 6Gb/s (SATA III) runs at a speed of 600MB/s, where USB3.0 can handle up to 640MB/s
The external housing you are using also matters.

Overall, if you are planning to do anything OS related, internal is the best option.
Is something that I don't understand your laptop has USB 3.0 but it use IDE?
If has a USB 3.0, 99,99% has a internal SATA, in that case replace the 1TB HD with SSD, install OS and games and you will see a great deference on performance .

Hi, thx for the answers. To make it clear, I must have made a mistake to call the disk IDE, trying to distinguish between SSD and HDD. I have also taken a SSD from my desktop and put it in an external case to connect it to the NTB through USB 3.O. Obviously the best solution would be to open NTB and replace HDD with SSD I may well do so in the future. For the time being I was just wondering where do I get faster performance - internal HDD or external SSD through USB 3.O. Looks like SSD is the way. Thx again.

Hi the SSD is clearly much faster than HDD but I don't know what impact to the performance has of USB connection, I suggest you to use a program like HD Tune in order to check the performance of both disks.
