SSD 'Transfer Mode' x17 vs x40?

So I have two Samsung 960 250GB NVMe's, however when looking in Crystal Disk Info, I notice some difference.

One says 'Transfer Mode x17' the other one says 'Transfer Mode x40'

C: 17
D: 40

This is in a Laptop, a G752VS with an i7 6700HQ, GTX 1070 and 32GB of ram.

Why is this? What is Transfer Mode, and why is my C drive different? (NOTE: The laptop picture is from google, not mine)

The transfer mode is the connection type between the SSD and the motherboard. PCIe x40 indicates it is using 40 lanes of the PICe bus, x17 would be 17 lanes. More lanes means it can typically transfer more data faster. Lanes are physical connections (like wires) that connect from your SSD to the CPU.

The difference you see is because of how and where drives are installed on the motherboard, not all slots have the capability of using all lanes and they cannot be shared.

I should've added more information. I'll update my post.

I forgot to mention I'm using a Laptop, a G752VS to be exact.. the slots are basically parallel like Ram Slots kind of. Why would one be slower than the other?

If I swap them, in theory, would my C drive then be 40x?

Lol, no, the SSDs are not using 40 or 17 lanes. First off, PCIe only supports x1, x2, x4, x8, x16, or x32 (rarely used). Secondly, the 960 SSD only has a x4 connection. Thirdly because your laptop doesn't have that many lanes (would have 36 at most).

I'm guessing the utility is misreading some parameter.

Unless you're actually seeing one perform noticeably worse that the other, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hey there TJ Hooker, no problem, I just reboot my Laptop and this is what happened now..

C went from 17x to 40x
D went from 40x to 127x

Seems CrystalDiskInfo is backfiring as you said, and the values seem to change every time I launch the program.

Looks like it was just a false alarm all along. ;d

Hello, I recently bought a new laptop, Installed new windows, when I was copying my files from my old computer to new laptop, laptop always BSOD if the file is too big, and then boots up again and I get a message saying "No operating system found, Please install operating system" but I turn it off, turn back on again, everything is fine, I get the same problem while install big games, but never get this issue while playing games, I also used CrystalDiskInfo, It shows 100% health, everything is fine, but it doesn't show anything under transfer mode tab, it just shows ---- | ----, please help

Use latest Crystal disk. Some readings are changed to reflect more user friendly data.
