Hi, I have an old AsRock board with only 3 standard PCI 2.2 (not express) 32-bit interfaces as the only option for video upgrade. Would a 64/128/256 BIT CARD FIT IN a 32 bit slot. And would a standard PCI 3.0 fit in a PCI 2.2 slot.I want a shader3.0/4.0 512 mb card.I have found some cards. Please suggest which one would be compatible ?

His Radeon 5450 HD Silence 512 Mb PCI edition
PNY VCGFX522PEB GeForce FX 5200 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Video Card
PNY GeForce 8400GS 512MB DDR3 PCI DVI+VGA+HDMI Low Profile Graphics Card VCG84512D3SPPB

If none are compatible suggest a card of your own. Just should have a 3.0 shader at least.

You're confusing the GPU's VRAM bits with the PCI slot bits.

64/128/256 bit doesn't have anything to so with the PCI slot. It's talking about the GPU VRAM.

In any case, I honestly have no idea if cards like that (at least the 5450 and 8400) will work in a system that old (the FX5200 might). If the board is old enough to not even have an AGP slot, it's old (or at the very least, not really something that should be used for gaming). The CPU has to be insanely slow.

What mobo is it, anyway?

Edit: After thinking about it, there may have been a few OEM (Dell, HP, Gateway, etc.) P4 era boards that were PCI only. Not sure about that, though.

I just did an extensive search of ASRock's site, and I can't even find a board (for any CPU) that has 3 PCI slots and no other slots (AGP, for instance).

I found one Socket A/462 board that only had 2 PCI slots and nothing else, but that's it.

Are you sure that it doesn't have an AGP slot?

PCI 32 bit and 64bit have different card length and Key for the slots http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6f/PCI_Keying.png

Sad thing is that PCI is not backward compatible, meaning u have either have to buy graphic card with PCI 2.2 version and I though it would be close to impossible or super high price.

Take Note
His Radeon 5450 HD Silence 512 Mb PCI edition << 64bit card interface, won't work
PNY VCGFX522PEB GeForce FX 5200 <<< No clue
PNY GF8400 GS <<<<< PCI-Express not PCI

U MIGHT be able to use this card but i'm not so sure abt the shader 3.0 http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-S-Video-Graphics-512-P1-N402-LR/dp/B001V9LQC0/ref=pd_cp_e_0

^ The 32 bit PCI slot part isn't relevant, really. All of those cards are 32 bit PCI cards (even the 8400. There really is a PCI version of it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133364 ). 64 bit would be PCI-X (not PCIe).

I thought along the same lines, at first, but then I figured out that he was talking about the VRAM (obvious, since 128 and 256 bit PCI slots don't even exist). So, none of that has any bearing on anything.

I still think his board might have an AGP slot, though.

Sorry for being late. Board is AsRock P4I45GV R3.00- has a AGI (not agp-its short for ASROCK GRAPHICS INTERFACE which supports few selected 4x/8x AGP cards....and those cards are very old and would not serve my purpose).Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz/1 Gb Ram.Look, I heard that a guy from this forum used PNY VCGFX522PEB GeForce FX 5200 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Video Card and it worked fine. So i wrote its name. Sad to know that PCI 3.0 does'nt go with a PCI 2.2 and interfaces of 64/128 bit cards are different. That Radeon 5450 was a super video upgrade for my old mobo.

Huh?! The P4i45GV R3.0 has PCI (PCI 2.2) and AMR (Audio Modem Riser), the P4i45GV R5.0 has an AGP. Neither can support any PCIe GPU.

Support on P4i45GV R3.0:
NO - HD 5450 = PCI Express (PCIe)
NO - GeForce FX 5200 = PCI Express (PCIe)
NO - GeForce 8400GS = PCI Express (PCIe)

Not true. There are PCI (not PCIe) versions of each. Look for yourself.

The 5450, specifically: HIS H545H512P Radeon HD 5450 Silence 512MB 64-bit DDR3 PCI HDCP Ready Low Profile Video Card

And the 8400GS: PNY VCG84512SPEB GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Low Profile Ready Video Card

And finally, the FX5200: PNY VCGFX522PEB GeForce FX 5200 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Video Card

In other words, all of those will work (or at least all are PCI).

Newegg is wrong, go to AMD's site (specifications) -> http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/ati-radeon-hd-5000/hd-5450-overview/pages/hd-5450-overview.aspx#2

Ok, how about this? http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-580.shtml It's a PCI (not PCIe) card. I think HIS would get it right, don't you?

Regardless, the other two are also PCI cards. I've checked and re-checked. Trust me.

If some manufacture is building a GPU off-spec then it's begging for problems least including bottlenecking. It's like taking 'good' money and 'burning' it, 2D won't be any faster and 3D any of those GPU's are so outdated that they're a waste of money.

Here's my best advice, if the OP wants better graphics then it's time to upgrade the entire system. Otherwise the OP is wasting their money.

An AMD APU CPU (e.g. FM2's) will outperform any of these 'GPU's' at the same price 'invested.' So I'd look for a 'Black Friday' PC or build one.

Fine. Then would a DDR2 mobo(with modern Graphics card slot and support) , A dual core(to run 08-09 games),a decent 2gb ddr2 ram come in 140 $ ? I can'nt afford more than that. Deconsider the chassis/HDD/DVD-RW/PSU/......
