hey all,
i have a copy of Starcraft that worked fine under windows 98 and 2000. when i upgraded my computer using windows xp home starcraft no longer wants to play. it is installed without any problems, but when i try to play it says that a required file cannot be found, make sure the cd is in the drive etc.
has anyone had a problem like this? how did you resolve it? (cause i KNOW some people have been able to play it on xp)

thanks a lot,

Yeah, I always crack Starcraft before I play it. I think, couple of years ago when I was still using 2k, I just did a normal install rather than a 'full' install. Still cracked it, and it still recognized the cd. But it sucked so bad (I was using my laptop and 6x usb burner to read) that I just copied the rest of the game over and played it from there.

That was the one time I played broodwars too. I wouldn't call Starcraft the worst buy I ever made (that goes to Mechwarrior4), but I wouldn't say I've gotten my money out of it...

im not sure you completely understand.. you see.. it's not a copy that requires cracks at all. It's a direct copy from an original cd. it's worked fine just like it WAS the original cd until i installed xp.... NOW it has problems.

One feature on xp is that you can change which OS you want an application to run under. If you find it won't run because XP is too new (or crappy) go into... I believe its properties and set the OS to Win 98 and see how that works.

Just to confirm, I have been running SC for years -

First under Win98SE
Then under Win2k
Now under WinXP

All worked flawlessly. I agree with the others that are saying that your CD is scratched.

Mine is too. But it really chaps my @$$ when I do a full install on a game, and it just *HAS* (insert psycho hand twich here) to check the cdrom drive to make sure the cd is there. If I wanted the cdrom in the drive, I wouldn't have dun a full install in the first place. Unless I *didn't* do a full install in the first place, in which case I don't want all that junk on my hard disk and am prepared to deal with the cdrom. I usually play in a window, which rules if you're trying to do something else too.

It's a safedisk1 game. There's a good chance you didn't get a good copy. Try reading it with your burner this time. Clone cd is a good investment if you're backing up your games.
