Steam and steam games on ssd

Hello,

So there are two questions I need help with:

1) Can I install steam onto my HDD and steam games onto my HDD?

2)Also, do I have to make a separate folder for where my games get installed even if I have steam in my HDD.

You can run steam and its games on a combination of hard drives and ssds

The build in library feature allows having games installed to any location you have created.

To check and change these settings select Steam(top right) - > Settings -> Downloads -> Steam Library folders. You can add library locations for this section.

It is recommended to make a folder for your library(Even if it is just called Games. my image I made a games folder with a steam library folder because other games are installed in the games folder), but steam will make any required folders(steamapps for one will be auto created.).

If you want to copy games back and forth from SSD to HDD it takes a bit more work since you have to bring the apps ACF file around too. The ACF file is names after the games appid not the games actual name.

You will be asked if you want to create a library on the other drive. Once created you will have an option to select your normal one or any other ones you have created.

Before my recent drive swap around, I had Steam games living on 3 different dives.
Steam client on the OS SSD, and games elsewhere.

Just make a folder on the other drive..call it MyGames, or whatever.
Tell the Steam client that is an alternate location.

On downloading/installing a new game, it will ask 'where'. Select that other space.

If you install steam on the hdd, you will have to go to the steam settings and create another library on your SSD. Then you will be able to choose where your games are installed. (Steam - Settings -Downloads - Steam Library Folders)

Although if it were me, I'd install steam onto the SSD. The SSD has more then enough speed to run both a game and the steam. Then as your finish games, or decide you need the space on your ssd, back them up to the HDD. This way you can simply reinstall when you decide to replay them.

Sorry to bother you and you have been a big help but can I make a folder inside where steam is installed on my HDD or do I have to make a folder on my hdd?

Steam will automatically create a folder for downloaded content on your 'C' HDD.
To download and install content onto another drive just create a folder on that drive, then, follow Nukemasters instructions to point Steam to that folder.
Note, once you have pointed to that folder, all subsequent downloads/installs will go into that folder, you can change the destination folder per download if you wish, just change the destination in the dialogue box that pops up after you click on the 'install' button.

This is not always possible.
With my previous OS drive, 120GB SSD....a 70GB Steam library would have taken up far too much space.
Hence, games living elsewhere, with little if any performance impact.

Now...they all live on the new 960GB SSD, and the OS, etc on the 250GB SSD...

Install the Steam client on the regular OS drive.
On the other drive, create a folder
Call it whatever you want
In the Steam client:

Settings
Downloads
Steam Library Folders
Add Library Folder

This is mine, currently:

(I just made that other folder on the O drive, just for this)
