Steam icons appearing?

Hello! I have an issue with my steam updater, it seems that whenever steam updates (every few days) and whenever it launches a game, it places about 20 or more different icons on my desktop, if I delete those icons they simply reappear when I launch steam again. It seems that the only way to get rid of them is to set them as hidden and even that only works until the next update of steam. Please help!

Back up all your games, delete steam then reinstall.
