i find this shocking. does Microsoft even still support SP1? why would any company waste time supporting anything but SP3? nevermind the people who refuse to update are going to be a much larger burden on the support system

I don't understand. Steam requires internet access, if you've installed XP in I don't know the last 4 years, it will automatically update to SP3, so who are these people? And just how thoroughly have they been hacked?

I've had SP3 since forever and Im still sticking to it till the day Windows 7 is dirt cheap.

I can sort of understand not updating. Often when Windows has had a few years to build up crap in the system a service pack update gets royally borked. You got to figure a computer still at XP SP1 has the mother-load of crap built up in it.

Still I can't picture a computer that has SP1 even being able to play the vast majority of games on Steam and those with a PC that old and whom are too cheap to buy a newer one are probably too cheap to pay for any games. I mean you can pick up a 2006 Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM and a high end nVidia or ATI from the same year for little more than $100.

A hundred bucks. Stop being cheap and get off that archaic OS that can't properly utilize modern hardware let alone more than 3GB of RAM.

And I can't wait for the day when VALVe stops supporting XP all ogether. Its an old OS and needs to go away like 95/98/2000/ME have.

Lets hope they support Windows 7 for a long, long time, too...when Microsoft releases the next version of Windows which I want to actually pay for. I might have a SmartPhone that can run Crysis by then, though.

I don't remember which SP it was, but installing it on XP did all kinds of stupid crap to my system originally, I had to uninstall it. So technically, it can sometimes bite, really hard.

But in general, I agree with the user base here, time to get a new PC and move to windows 7. XP is more for old school 8-16bit gaming now then anything else.

the features in user interface, the way everything was set up, ability to change icons, and not needing to google EVERY action you want to take if you ever used a windows os before, are gone in windows 7... i have had to re learn damn near everything and where everything was, granted that is a small, yet anoying curve that should have never been, but i got past it.

what i cant get past is the lack of easy tile ability, folder sizes, and easy to find options like there was with xp...

ill give windows 7 props for interrogating features that want into the os, and being a 64 bit os that is supported heavily, but beyond that, i FAR prefer xp to win 7.

or go with the mentality that if it aint broke dont fix it?
i dont update anything on my pc unless something i want to do demands it, not because im lazy, not because its time consumeing, but because i dont trust every update to work glitch free...

currently i have an amd card and use acdsee, but panning with the arrow keys is broke with amd drivers half the time, so i cant update them even if i want to, and i don't unless a game requires it, or i have a problem that i believe a driver update may fix.

i have also updated windows before and gotten into a bluescreen loop.

i have no trust for updates, and don't do it unless im forced to. and as for being hacked. i have no irrational fear that im the target everyone goes after, i keep no sensitive information on my pc, and if it did get hacked, well, all they could see is my porn collection.

I have a 9" EEEPC with tiny SSDs (4Gb+16Gb) and XP SP2 (preinstalled). XP is on the 4GB drive. There is no way that can update to SP3 due to lack of HDD space. And yes, there are games on Steam that run on it.

Older machines i have Run Win XP, not sure if they have SP2 or 3 but they are non-legit.. What can i say i was a poor bastard with those PC's. Currently have vista "legally," moving to 7 or 8 soon legally on my next machine.

Um Windows XP can support more then 3GB of ram it's called Windows XP 64.

lol, WTF?! My grandma knows how to do all that in 7 with virtually no tutoring from me, it's barely any different to XP, lrn2windoze

I've sold more computers with windows 7 than I can count and offer customers the ability to call up if they're stuck or having trouble with anything and I've never come across anyone calling with problems like that. The easiest thing I can tell them is treat it like a prettier version of XP and just read things properly before getting worried about something that's popped up on the screen...

Windows 8 on the other hand...that just not windows...

SP3 mucked my computer up a lot when I first upgraded many years ago, a compatibility issue between my BIOS and SP3 rendered my computer useless, rebooting in the boot process every time. It wasn't a low end board either. I can't remember how i managed to get into windows in the end to download the latest BIOS and flash it.

Either way it is time now to update to at least SP3 or better than that Windows 7. Windows 8 for me seems like it was designed for tablets rather than desktops and laptops, I shall not be upgrading to that any time soon. If money is a worry for you why not wait for Windows 8 to come out and grab Windows 7 cheap.

most people have no need to go into control panel options, or would ever have a reason for changing an icon. i also learned that most people never even knew tile/cascade options were in xp to begin with.

i get that most people dont care, and would rather use aero snap, but i would rather have the tile options.

what i dont get is for what purpose did most of the things average people wont get to, did they change it?

hell i just looked to make sure, there is not file/edit/tools bar on the explorer any more, and if i want to find the folder options i have to google where that is.

i have valid complaints about windows 7 and ill admit many are minor compared to the trade off of getting 8gb of ram (wanted 16 but not paying 400$ for that ddr2) and os ssd support.

XP 64-bit isn't as good as normal 32-bit XP. It had much worse driver support, more bugs, less updates. As soon as Vista appeared, for 64-bit it was better than 64-bit XP.

I am guessing they turned auto-update off and simply never felt the need to update beyond SP1.
XP was a solid OS after all.

They don't use auto-update because they don't want the Genuine Windows checker that's built into SP2 and SP3 to discover they have unlicensed copies of XP on their machines, which will disable it's functionality.
