Question Stock cooler i7 3770.

So I just bought a cheap i7 to get some performance boost ( I will update to a new platform after a year until then I'm stuck with it).

Unfortunately I broke the Intel stock cooler mounting pins (the white cover that surround the black push pins on the bottom). To test if the cooler was adequate or not, I held down the cooler forcefully and ran some browser stress tests. Power draw was 60+ watts, 3.67ghz. Everything looks good but the temps don't. I shut off the test when it reached 100degrees within 2minutes. Idle temps -50degrees (ambient temps 25-30C).

Now I think it's because the cooler is loose or the stock cooler in adequate or maybe cheap thermal paste.

I can go out and buy a new stock cooler for $3, but would that be a waste? My old i5-3470S (peak 30watt consumption) was fine, max 70degrees under load.

All of the above!

Holding the cooler in place is obviously not that answer. Get a new cooler. But, I'd suggest on getting something a little better than stock for $3. Seriously, spend 30-50$ and you will have a cooler that you can move to your next system.
So Is there no way I can just run the system with a stock cooler for like few weeks? I am going to salvage a free one from a very old PC. I thought it would be fine since I am not overclocking or anything.

For your reference, the stock cooler is the most basic one, the one without the copper slug ( full aluminium heatsink, probably ships with the i3s).

I was expecting higher temperatures but maybe the double power draw (30w i5 to 60W i7) could have been too much for the stock cooler?

I will check with the free cooler once, if inadequate will swiftly buy a cooler master hyper t212 for as little as $10.

Yes, you do that if you wish. I only meant getting something a little stronger than stock.

Yes. This is very likely if it's the stock cooler for the i5

Ok, so I am using the extra stock cooler, it working ok-ish but still throttling doesn't happen and sometimes shuts my pc off if I render a 5minute video. I have decided to buy a new tower cooler. I found these two options.
Cooler master hyper T20.
Deepcool AG200.

Both are available at the same price and looks the same. Which one do you think will be adequete for my cpu? Max power draw is ~60watts (8 threads stress test) and while gaming its 30-40W.

The Deepcool clears about 36CFM, whilst the CM clears about 31CFM. I'd go with the Deepcool.

Do yourself a favor and buy a cooler that is not pushpin mount based.
Preferably the one that you might be able to use on a new build.
Neither of your two choices is going to be better than a properly mounted stock cooler.
The key to mounting a pushpin cooler well is to push down on diagonal pairs of pins at the same time.
Otherwise, you will never get the cooler level.

Have you considered trying to salvage your damaged cooler?
Replace the white pins with a screw of suitable length and bolt the cooler in place.
tighten the screws a small bit at a time in a criss-cross fashion.

Actually i dont mind the push bin brackets and clip on for the tower cooler. Right now this properly mounted stock cooler is inadequte, just for finishing my work, by doing some underclocking and disabling the turbo boost to bring it down to i5 level performance/heat. Copper is expensive so sellers dnot sell the decent copper slug one in my country. So aftermarket cooler it is 🙁

If you intend to do video rendering, then get a decent heatpipe cooler - 4 heatpipes minimum.
Deepcool Gammaxx 400 - for example.

Look at the back of your motherboard.
You should see that all 4 pins are fully through the motherboard and locked.
Otherwise, the cooler may not be mounted as well as you think it is.
It is all to easy to do.

IDK where you are shopping from, but understand that "Snowman" makes a cooler that has exceptional performance to price. It is readily available on Ali Express as least expensive option.
Im from Nepal, funny that is borders china but china DOESN'T ship to nepal cheaply. Shipping costs are $100+ customs are too much a hassle.

Ouch!

It is quite cool, the internet, eh?

I have never knowingly conversed with someone from Nepal. I know this will be a bit stereotypical and hope I don't offend to ask, but are you involved with the climbing or tourist industry there?

The reason I ask is that I understand that Sherpa and others involved in that industry there make well over the typical yearly wage and would also be able to afford such luxuries.

Feel free not to answer if too personal or if you prefer I will be happy to edit this out.

No not really, even I haven't even properly toured around in my own country.😂

Interesting question, they do earn more than the average here, you also have to factor the living expenses on top of mountains. $2 for a glass of hot water? Quickly negates the extra income...

Anyways, getting off topic here on toms hardware (better to dm me, if you want to chat with a Nepali guy i guess). I don't want to spend too much on this old pc right now. It gets my job done well for now and I will build the latest one in the future definitely 😁.
