Strange lines during video playback and games

Hi guys

I have a LG W1942 1440x900 monitor and I'm experiencing weird lines during 1080p video playback and games. I have tried taking pictures of it but it's so blurry and hardly anything can be seen since i have a crappy phone.

I know it's hard to describe but it looks like small ///// alike lines on screen. Which ruins the quality of the image. I already pretty much tried everything such as installing latest driver and new codecs, tried tweaking settings on MPC HC and Catalyst Control Center. Tried different codec videos such as mp4 and wmv and other 1080p videos but i am getting same results. Anyone knows what is happening ? monitor faulty or graphics card ? I didn't encounter this problem on my very old 1024x768 VGA monitor from Dell. but i did experience flickering only on games though.

Windows display my monitor as Generic PnP monitor but CCC displays as my monitor model number. I'm trying to install monitor drivers but i don't see any exe files inside the rar file. only some inf and other file types. not sure how am i going to install it since this is probably my first time installing monitor drivers.

It's probably your display. 6bit panels with hi FRC can produce a lot of visible dithering between alternating frames. It looks like this:

Yup, that is pretty much confirmed it that's what i am experiencing. this is so weird this monitor works fine on my brother PC (he had AMD HD 5850, or i guess newer graphic card just doesn't like older monitor) and i asked him whether he encounter any strange lines as i did but all he said there's none. i am not sure he is lying or not.

Since he just went out and get a ASUS LED 1080p monitor for himself. Ugh... i guess there no way fixing this then ?

And yeah i said i already did everything including reconnecting cables to check whether they are inserted properly. but same results definitely monitor fault.

If there's really no way to fix this, which monitor will be good for my AMD HD 7850 ? i am looking for a good monitor that has resolution higher than 1440x900 above (if not i probably want to get a 1920x1080 resolution monitor myself not sure if my card can handle solid fps at that resolution though) and it's very good for games and 1080p playback without any problems at all.

Please do recommend them as i am quite a newbie and not sure which other resolution are Full HD 1080p. and which one is better LED or LCD ?

Some people are more susceptible to this effect, but it should be visible on both cards. If you can, check the monitor on your brothers pc (or any other pc) to confirm that it really is showing a pattern on the image.

As for a new monitor, let us know what is your budget. Other things to consider are:
-Size: 23, 24, 27"?
-Screen type: glossy (glare) or matte (anti-glare)?

All monitors on the market today are using LCD technology. LED in the name means that the screen uses LEDs for backlighting. It's a marketing trick to make you believe that you are buying a new super advanced technology while the only advantage of LEDs over older technology (CCFL backlight) is a lower power consumption.

Ugh... i doubt it's possible to ask him to do a test on the monitor since he's pretty stubborn. He refused to believe me as he said before he bought his new 1080p monitor it's working fine and doesn't has any strange lines like that.

He said it's my graphics card is causing it which is impossible since i only had a 5 years old Dell monitor which is 1024x768 res. (I was in a tight budget during that time and didn't get a new monitor )

And i used DVI to VGA adapter connected to the monitor. I had no problems but only having weird horizontal lines flickering going up/down when playing PC games. Other than that watching videos and on desktop are normal no lines or anything.

I'm not sure it's either my card or the monitor itself is faulty, but i highly suspect it's monitor fault as you know sometimes newer hardware just doesn't like/compatible older hardware. I don't have any spare 5000 or 7000 series cards to test them on the monitors. Maybe 5000 series works fine on the monitors but newer ones just doesn't like older monitors.

When i hooked up my bro LG DVI monitor. the horizontal flickering on games are gone. but after doing some tests such as watching videos and playing games. i found this weird straight and sometimes ///// alike lines are appearing on the screen. I thought it's some settings needs to be tweaked for DVI monitor. After spend hours trying to get rid of it, nothing works getting the same results as i pretty much done everything i could except using my integrated graphics from Intel.

Any ideas how to use integrated graphics without taking my GPU out ?

Go to BIOS, advanced, north bridge, set primary graphics adapter to onboard.

Yes they are good. Get either 2412M (1920x1200, more vertical space) or 2312hm (1920x1080):

The gfx card output should exactly match the monitor resolution and refresh rate. Therefore, I suggest you check your gfx card output properties, such as refresh rate, resolution, etc. It is not important for the monitor, I believe, if the gfx card has HD5xxx or HD7xxx chip on it as long as the signal going to your monitor is suitable for the monitor. The monitor should be able to extract the informaton from the signal.

If your gfx card output does not match that of the monitor, then the monitor internal scaling engine tries to reprocess the input signal so that it properly displays it. As I understand, your monitor's internal scaling engine is not perfect. Therefore, you should let the gfx card do all the scaling and produce a signal that is good for the monitor. This means your 1080p video must be re-processed in the gfx card to a lower/higher resolution rather than in the monitor.

Sadly, this doesn't happen to 1080p only whether is 480p,720p or any lower res videos. those lines are appearing on every videos. Not to mention i just watched couple of videos on youtube and it seems that it happens on youtube videos too. These lines are more noticeable when there's motion moving on screen.

Okay i am going to give it a try with integrated graphics and see if the problem still persist. Do i need to turn off my AMD graphics card (if it's possible) before turning on integrated graphics ? or it will auto turn off by itself ?

Switch the BIOS setting, connect the signal cable to motherboards hdmi or vga and that's all.
Make sure to set the resolution in windows to 1440 x 900 @60 Hz.

Now I checked that your LG display has one analog input only, sometimes this can be an image stability issue for LCDs, which is normally dealt with using a digital connection. That's not an option here, but remeber to connect a new monitor, if you buy one, using digital connection - DVI or HDMI or DisplayPort.

As long as the video resolution is not an exact match of the monitor resolution, you have re-processing of the signal, either in the monitor or in the gfx card. What I try to say is, make the re-processing happen in the gfx card, not in the monitor.

Also check if underscan/overscan setting is not at 0% in CCC.

Hmm i guess it's impossible to fix this monitor except buying at new monitor then ? i am going to use integrated graphics today if that doesn't help i might try using the VGA cable to connect to my monitor and connect to my graphics card using DVI to VGA adapter to test if the problem still persist.

I see do you mean by using hardware acceleration on graphics card to render the video instead of using monitor ? i think pretty much done this before. but same results unless i did it in a wrong way. If i don't get what are you trying to say, then please do guide me how do you do this kind of stuff as i am newbie when it comes to these stuff.

Any ideas where to find this underscan/overscan settings ? i can't find it a CCC
