Strange PC performance drop

Hi, I'm posting on behalf of a friend. He has some issues with his PC and we both have no idea what's causing them. His PC used to run games fine but one day he got terrible performance in games, going from 40FPS average on GTA V to around 20FPS. He hasn't overclocked or changed any components in his rig.

What we've tried to fix it -

Turning it off and on again (simple but it works for some things!)
Virus scans with malwarebytes (including rootkit scans)
Checking temps (still all fine, no hotter or colder than before the problem began)
Doing a clean install of windows
Re installing GPU drivers
Downgrading GPU drivers
Resetting CMOS
Scanning his games for corrupt files
Updating windows to the lastest update
Re seating ram

None of this has worked. My rig has the same specs as his and I have owned it for as long as him and mine has worked perfectly fine, been a really reliable old workhorse, so I don't know what's up with it.

Basic specs -

AMD Athlon x4 860k
Windows 10 pro
Nvidia GTX 750ti
8GB ram
1tb hdd

Here's an idea to help identify the problem:

1. Install the free trial version of Passmark Performance Test and run the benchmark.

2. Compare the results to the average for each component in the system: CPU, GPU, Memory, and Disk

3. If the CPU result is well below the standard:

__Check that Control Panel > System > Power Options is set to "Performance". It's possible that a Windows upgrade has reset to a power saving mode. < That happened to one of the HP workstations in the office.

4. If the GPU result is well below average, the unit may be preparing for early retirement.

5. > And so on for each test parameter component.

6. If there is no resolution, if you would, post the results of the Passmark test.

Are you sure its ready for retirement? it's a fairly new rig, built only last year. I can't do passmark as I'm currently at the airport so you'll have to wait a while on that

Sorry, no, not the whole system. I meant that the GTX 750Ti might be failing on some level.

The Passmark test should help identify the problem. If it's the quirky power option setting, everything else will appear OK except the CPU will be indicating about 1/2 performance.

Here's hoping it's that easy thing.

1. In BIOS make sure that all cores are enabled. Try and duplicate the BIOS configuration exactly as the other. identical system has it.

2. Have another look to ensure that the Control Panel > Power Option settings are set to "Performance".

3. Turn off sleep mode.

4. Check msconfig and see if there is anything unusual in the startup list.

That's an odd one.

Hello,

Had a look at pretty much everything you listed apart from the checking the cores in BIOS.
As said before everything was set to high perfomance in control panel,
sleep mode was already turned off
and nothing seemed unusual in the start-up list in msconfig however in the advanced boot options menu I did find that number of processors was not selected and the in the greyed out drop down menu it said 1, I have checked that box now and have selected 4.I will see if this has helped at all in a short while.

I have tried a couple of games and have not noticed any difference in performance. I can re-do the Passmark test if that would help.
