FYI on the SMOKE photo ... showing @ 18:50:56 on image and it shows Image Updated 12:50:00 PM EST ...

Current time is ... 19:57:23 on image and it shows image updated 01:57:00 PM EST

So that smokey image was 1 hr ago - not current.

But still .... wow! that is so cool.

PORKY ... you are so out of it... <A HREF="http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20050603/stresstest-01.html" target="_new">Did you read this at all</A> - do you think that was a good experience?

From THG ... <i>"At this point the only solution left was to use a board with an Intel 955X chipset, which, although it is sold only individually, is supposed to run without problems. However, the use of an Intel component involves a clear limitation: the current Nvidia driver deactivates the SLI mode of the graphic card on all Intel boards.

Despite this, in order to continue to guarantee a fair comparison between AMD and Intel systems, we are now determined to use a complete Intel platform based on the 955X chipset. So we established new conditions: all benchmarks will be restarted and the counters simultaneously set back. The SLI mode in the AMD system will also be disabled. " </i>

Also, it would be interesting to know if THG had discussions with Intel regarding this test -- and what/if anything did Intel tell THG if/how they should do competing against AMD. 'Cause I would expect before these CPUs to be shipped out, Intel/AMD has to do tons of testing etc... themselves.

Strange, I noticet that the WebTemp graph and the image hasn't been updated in over an hour... Byt the site says that thing is still online...

I always have to hit refresh to get things that are up to date. The weekly overveiw for the systems is a differant story. The AMD one is only about 3 hours behind, but the Intel one has not change in days. I wish they would leave all the data for the weekly stuff up just so we can see the mess the P-EE went through.

Those CPUs that they received were not enginering samples. They were retail samples as they had to start distributing them to Dell about the time they sent them to the review sites. They are likely sested fist just to make sure. Bad reviews are not a good thing for PR.

I am almost sure they have been running up their phone bill talking to Intel the last few days. Heck they had GigaByte send them a new BIOS just to see if it would fix the stability issues (didn't work but it was worth a try). Even though the stress test is not running so good, they must be getting a ton of hits as the site has been VERY slow.

I still also want to know if they have asked any other site to try to duplicate these failures, buy just run 4 stress tests on a P-EE to see if the system will fail within say 24 hours.

It's OK, everyone can relax now, Porkster has said in another thread that he's not going to post in this one anymore!

LMAO you actually made me believe it, but it seemd so likely, no wonder the page didn't change when I hit refresh, or why they actually got the thing running again. But that was a nie modification, it seemed really likely...

P4M ... yeah, I noticed the web site URL --
at first I didn't but I have a screen print of the image and it's different than the one posted now ... :) Someones been adding to their creation!

And the graphs etc... are different than what is there now.

They got me ... :)
Love it tho... pretty funny.

lol nice

Anyway, main issue for me is that this can't be considered a very interesting performance test
I agree completely.

That said, i'm still interested in seeing how it is supposed to be run. Intel has been known in the past for standards, and is used by many memory manufactures for testing on their memory on intel's mobo's. I can't believe they would produce such a pos. Obviously the facts speak for themselves (smoke and all lol; nice heh). But i can't help but ask myself, why? Surely they tested these cpu before sending them out, and with multiple motherboards. Surely the motherboard makers tested their mobo's with all different kinds of cpus.

So whats going on?
-either intel has really fud up
-toms has really fud up, over and over again
-the individual cpu is bad and causing problems with mobos in addition to overheating; (they haven't tried replacing this yet have they?)
-or something...bad power? to the psu's? <grasps at straws>
-some combination of the above

Well, it seems at least since they changed to the 955x motherboards, the cooler they used wasnt up to the task. Either it was faulty (which could well be, considering the really low fan speeds) or underdesigned. Either way, in my book that is not quite a major f* up yet, especially not since this cpu isn't available/launched yet (or is it ?).

Of course that doesn't explain the other issues it suffered previously.

Regarding the nForce4 boards, apparently there is something really wrong with them. Could be an nVidia issue, or simply the boards not being able to sustain the power requirements of 2 high gpu's and a power monster like the 840EE. Either way, its hard to blame intel for that, if indeed that is the cause.

Regarding the intel boards not working.. I'm at a loss there; but there isn't much explanation either.. what exactly didn't work ? They only say they did not work with 840EE, so its anyones guess what really happened.

Regarding the SLI not working with the 955X; could just be that nVidia's drivers don't support it yet on these boards. Might be fixed by the time these boards actually ship.

So.. if you want to look at all this through a pair of rosy intel glasses, its not yet certain intel messed up anything significantly. Of course now if this system starts rebooting as well, I give up trying to explain 😀

I like the glow coming from the CPU area....

Anyway, it took forever for me to get it since I never clicked on your link, I just switched tabs to the Intel monitoring tab and I noticed nothing suspicious. Finally I clicked your link and got to see it in all its beauty....good job.

Yes... Intel blood all over the floor and Apple has just slipped and fallen in it. 😀

Four hours of up time for Intel... I think they are going for a record. 😛

What would Intel do if it had something to do with the new CrossBar that added to the chip to arbitrate the bus load for the chips? It would not even be worth trying to redesign it for 90nm. They would have to try to fix it for 65nm. I think that would be worse than the P3 1.13Ghz launch.

"Anyway, what we need now are more then Intel based tests. We need a system running for several days with 1 program, 2 programs, 4 programs and say...8 programs. To get a better overall feel for multitasking performance. They also need to switch up programs, perhaps based on feedback from us? Let the readers choose! Power to the People!"

I totally agree. If they did as you suggested the test have value in terms of people making hardware buy decisions based on their different needs (running few or many programs at once).

Knowledge of the performance in a wider range of programs can often be found in other reviews of a product. So that isnt needed.

How these processors multitask is interesting but only if you test it over a wider range.

As it is now all thats being tested is ways how things can fail (and that is not intel exclusive!).

By now you should know I'm not that bad with photoshop :)
I remember faking a 3 GHz K8 core some years ago and people wouldn't even believe I faked it when i said I did ROFL!

Seriously, I had to add to add the spoof image, cause this was being reported on silicon investor as being genuine as well. Just don't belief everything you see on the web my friend.

If I'm not mistaken, the German update says they replaced either the entire HSF or just the fan part.
