"...you're chip runs at 67W +/- at full load I belive. Where are you getting your values from?"

There is a VERY common misconception that TDP is an actual power value...it is NOT! TDP is a temperature guideline for OEMs...nothing more.
For example, Intel sets their TDP based on what they consider to be the most likely conditions, and AMD sets theirs based on absolute theoretical max. The results are that Intel CPUs often exceed their TDP, and AMD CPUs never ever hit theirs.

If you want to see actual power usage numbers, you have to actually measure them (something neither AMD, Intel nor most review sites do).
Lost circuits did just that recently on some of the AMD CPUs...

Notice that the Venice core under full load runs at ~30w, while the Newcastle core is more than double that...
Of course the P4 would be about triple, but I don't know if anyone has actually done those measurements so I can't say for sure...

Cheers,
Charles

BTW, I have a new Venice core system for a backup, and nothing I can do (short of overclocking) will get the temp (using stock HSF and 1 case fan) over 32C...the average temp is ~27C
Edited by viditor on 06/20/05 07:54 AM.

Go easy on Ned...he is in the vast majority on his opinions...even many of the major review sites don't get this...🙂

Wuzy...where could I find this Toast program?

Cheers,
Charles

I already had figured out the priority, but thanks for the heads-up...
I think you're right, pretty good little program!
After 12 minutes, 35C...let you know again in an hour.

Cheers,
Charles

Now 32 minutes in and still 35C...

Now at 57 minutes, STILL at 35C. I don't think it's gonna get any hotter than this...

OK...after 1 hour it never went past 35C, I've shut off Toast and now it's back to 24C
Edited by viditor on 06/20/05 09:23 AM.

Wow thats pretty sweet. I think my NorthWood is pretty strong too. I upgraded my case(Antec 1050b) because I neeeded a beefier PSU. It feature this "Thermally advantaged" air vent and myu cpu is now running at 25c idle and 35-38 under full load. When I look at the number of the prescott and now the dual core im really impressed how cool my cpu is! CPU fan run at 2600 rpm almost all the time. I shall try toast to see how my cpu copes with it. The only "problem" is my passivly cooled Northbridge that runs at 38 idle and under 45 full load. Nothing disturbing by I suspect it olds me back when I push my cpu around 3.4 ghz(the core still reamins under 45c at 3.4 under load!)

Anyhow back to the topic this thread is intersting!Specially since they mentionned the user forum in update 9! More ppl might read this thread or at least the end of it =) and see that at least THGC didnt go down like THG!

=)

So lets look at the scores so far for performance
Test 1 2:2 (Taken with a pince of salt, given the priority issue)
Test 2 3:1
Test 3 3:0 (so far, but AMD should be able to beat the intel in farcry)

I can remember someone doing this kind of a ratio earlier in this thread, but I can't remember what the ratio was. Can you please describe it in more detail one more time.

I don't think it is a ratio. It is the number of wins.

Test #1 All 4 applications run concurrently (HT enabled on Intel)
Results: AMD beat Intel in two applications and Intel beat AMD in 2 applications.

Test #2 All 4 applications run concurrently (HT NOT enabled on Intel)
Results: AMD beat Intel in 3 applications and Intel beat AMD in 1 applications.

Test #3 Each application run independently, running one application at a time (HT enabled on Intel)
Results: AMD beat Intel in 3 applications and AMD is predicted to beat Intel in Far Cry.

I think that since the MAD started "working more" on the divx(priority is set to normal) it lags slightly behind in farcry...Might eb the one it lost on test 2. Im not certain and I too could be wrong hehe

From what I remember it was ahead on FPS but didn't have as many runs for some reason?? Or else it was that it had more runs but a slower FPS??

I don't think it outright lost, I think that one was more of a tie, or even a win as I remember it.

AMD has been beating Intel 24/7, there is no doubt about it.

But how they can say this ?
with hyperthreading turned on, and with the same test conditions, the Intel system puts the AMD system in its place

I thought AMD beat intel in all 4 apps on test #2? I dont remember now but I could be wrong.
Yes it did, and you all remember it very well.

When HT was off AMD won ALL, so stop lying.

Unbelievable....

This isnt even an Intel vs AMD thing anymore...

Its an Us vs THG thing...

By Us I mean Rational people who want fair, unbiased testing. People who for some insane reason EXPECT it from review sites. Sites who are supposed to be representing the customers, not asking them to grab their ankles....

When did THG hire Karl Rove to write their updates... =>

When did THG hire Karl Rove to write their updates
I have to say that this was the funniest thing I've read all night! (and sad because it's SO true!)
I've never seen such a universal lambasting of THG across all of the tech forums before this article came out...!
Of course, THG is laughing all the way to the bank...can you imagine the number of hits they've received by people actually having to read this in order to believe it?
It's sort of the Fox News approach to review sites...

Cheers,
Charles

Quit being a moron. All I did was rephrase what Starfishy said. I'm not changing anything I wrote because I copied it from someone else. You beef is with someone else!

Don't be rediculous, we all know it's true. Amd's place is 1/4 mile in front of Intel.

No it is with you, it was YOU who lied since you made the post.
So stop blaming others.

Are you a troll on a payroll ?

Heheh n00b raiser!
Update 10 is there!(I wont try to start a new thread this time Ned)
The live charts, which are continually updated, clearly indicate the difference in performance between the two processors.
Its funny its like a kid who doesnt want to admit the truth, trying to rephrase it because he cant lie anymore but at the same time not quite admitting it!

And why the hell to they put this:
It is also necessary to mention that with the Intel system, virtual processing (HyperThreading) is activated so that a total of four CPUs are available. AMD does not have this feature and is based on two physical units. Despite the clock rate of the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ with 2.4 GHz, which is lower than the Intel Pentium 840 EE with 3.2 GHz, the AMD system is able to hold its own.
Again same comment + it seams like intel PR departement asked the too add it!
And to hold its own is an under statement, it should read: its able to wreck intel!
