Can anyone help??? I have tried everything I can think of and my processor still overheats. It idles at 50C (I have checked in Bios and in the PC probe utility supplied with the board) and when I try and play ghost recon or any other game the temperature shoots up top the high 60C's and it locks up. I have tried 2 different heat sinks and have tried re-applying thermal grease (after cleaning it) a bunch of times. I have also tried three different types of thermal grease. (arctic silver, grease that came with upgraded heatsink and grease that came with stock). This is the third Striker Extreme board that I have recieved and I really dont want the aggravation of another RMA. (first one was completely dead out of the box, second one had same CPU temp problems). Also, if it relevant, when I instll the AI booster that came with the board, when I boot up, it will run until everything is all loaded then shuts down and restarts. the only way I can stop this is by booting into safe mode and unistalling it. I have nor overclocked anything. Everything is stock.
my setup is -

Striker Extreme Motherboard Bios Version 1503
E8400 processor
2GB Crucial Ballistix
8600GTS graphics card
850 Watt PSU
2 IDE 500GB hard drives
1 Sata DVD Drive
Antec 900 case (with optional fans installed and running)
All case fans are set on high
Running Windows XP profesional

Thanks!

I'm guessing the vcore is set on AUTO..what is your current voltage on your CPU? Have you manually set it to the VID on the box?

Also have you tried a different CPU if this is the 3rd board and same CPU. Just guessing this is an upgraded comp so you may have a spare floating about?

Honestly I dont know a great deal about BIOS settings. I probably got in way over my head when I bought this board. I have not adjusted anything. What would be the process for changing the Vcore? Unfortunately I dont have another CPU.

Thanks Halcyon! Real temp showed a much more realistic temp. (28C to 30C). two other problems I am having are -
1) When I try and instal Frontlines from the DVD (retail) it stops half way thru and tells me the setup files dont match the Cab file and that the medium is corrupt? I have exchanged the game once and am getting the same message on the new copy.
2) I am getting very poor comparitive scores on 3D Mark 06 (5533 3D Marks). Can you recommend anything?

Thanks!

Are you overclocking? Have you stress tested your rig?

Hi Halcyon,
I have used the extreme tweaker A1 tuning to overclock but nothing else. It is overclocked to 3.6GHZ using the extreme tweaker and runs fine with no problems. I have not stress tested the rig but it seems to run fine on Ghost Recon and The witcher. Can you suggest anything to stress test it?

Thanks for the help.

Radio_Active, thank you sooo much for your helpfull observation. I guess I should have pretended I knew as much as you. Then I too could post remarks about other peoples abilities.

I've seen the OS appear to function reliably and then fail when Prime 95 or Orthos is run on it...letting me know that the overclock is indeed not truly stable. I'd recommend running Prime 95 for at least, at least 1-2 hours and preferably at least overnight to verify that your system is stable and can be stressed without errors. If the system proves not to be stable (and this will appear obvious to some) I'd recommend killing the overclock until it is. In fact, as I write this, I'd recommend rolling back to fully automatic settings, no overclock at all, and run Prime 95 on your system. If its not stable at stock you're gonna want to deal with that first. Not to patronize, I'm just trying to help.

Hi Halycon,
You were right. It failed both orthos and Prime 95. What does that mean? (the results are below.) Prime 95 ran for 3 hours and 59 minutes. Orthos less than 2 minutes.

Orthos
Test 1, 4000 Lucas-Lehmer iterations of M19922945 using 1024K FFT length.
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.
Torture Test ran 0 minutes 8 seconds - 1 errors, 0 warnings.
Execution halted.

Prime 95
Fatal error: Rounding waas 0.4999511242, expected lless than 0.4
Hardware failure deteected, consult stress.txt file.
Torture test ran 3 hours, 59 minutes - 1 errors, 0 warnings.
Execution halted.

Thanks again for all the help.

Well, if its failing at stock automatic settings it could be because of faulty RAM maybe? Maybe up the RAM voltage a little. You can check the RAM with Memtest86 to ensure its good. How are you temps looking?

The temps look goood on real temp (low 20C's). I do not have a floppy drive though. is there any other way to test the RAM?

Tried upping the voltage on the ram, but got the same result. CPU 0 failed inside of 6 seconds with Orthos. (Seems to be CPU 0 that fails everytime) Is it possible that there is a problem with the processor?
Thanks again!

Tested CPU on its own with Orthos (stress cpu - stress cpu with Gromacs score) and it does not fail. when I do the do blend - stress CPU and RAM test it fails in 6 six seconds or less. I am guessing this means the RAM is the problem? (I chose the RAM based on neweggs sytem configurator) Ram is -
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT12864AA804 .

Thanks,

Embarresing as it may sound I opened it up and took a look at everything. I installed the RAM in the wrong slots. I had one in a blue slot and another in a white slot. Moved them so that they were both in white slots, restarted and right now Orthos has been running for an hour and 16 minutes with no problems at all. I will run orthos for the rest of today and let you know. (I know, stupid mistake.......)

Your great help is very nice halcyon

I'd like to add

You mentioned your temps in the range of 20
How much exactly ?
What is your ambient temp (Room Temp)??
Run RealTemp and then run Prime 95 and see the change in core tempsand tell us please
What is your HeatSink and Fan?
Waiting for you
:hello:

I lapped my Ultra 120 Extreme before installation cause I noticed it was extremely convex , i put it on glass table and started dancing, there was even no need for blade X check
So I don't know if there's a real difference before and after
I noticed from your sig we have almost same components
Different proc and HS
I like to know your temps
Mine are
47C-50C Under Prime 95
37C Idle
Note that Room temp 26C, my E8500 OC'd 3.6 (9X400), C1E enabled and proc idles at 2.4(6X400), temps measured by Real Temp 2.5

With my E6850 OC'd to 3.7Ghz I was getting 46-49C Under Prime 95
31C Idle

Room temp ~24-25C

With my Q9450 OC'd to 3.4Ghz (1700FSB) I'm getting 60-66C Prime95
46C Idle

...about a 2C difference between what I was getting b4 the lap job.

I've tried multiple different coolers, Zalman 9700NT, Xigmatek S-1283, and now the TRUE. I've read that the 45nm Core 2's have Digital Temperature Sensor issues and idle temps can be way off. It's difficult for me to accept that I've botched the CPU coolers and ArticSilver5 a total of 5 times on the Q9450. :( I was satisfied with the E6850 temps on the TRUE after the lap job but the Q9450 temps still suck. Maybe the 9450 will break and I'll have to replace it with a new revision (Intel's gotta know they've gotta fix the DTS issue), but I LOVE its performance. :)

Which software you are using to measure your temps

By the way there is ongoing discussion with CompuTronix in this thread
about CoreTemp, Real Temp, and Speed Fan

I use RealTemp. I've seen Comp's guide, as soon as I'm not feeling so lazy and am bored stiff I may do the calibrations he discusses.
