Dell XPS 9000. Does anyone have a fully, functional 100% reliable xps9000? I have had one for about a year and the experience has been a total nightmare. (Constant lockups, and re-starts on its own the problem). Two visits to my home by Dell Service Personel did NOT fix the problem. I would be interested in hearing from anyone with a normally functioning system and what configuration they have and their opinion of the computer. Thanks.

All computers whether they are Dell, HP, Home built, etc. require regular maintenance and upkeep. Currently, I have 4 Dells (average age 3 years) and 1 home built (18 months).

They all had problems in spite of careful maintenance by me. I avoid many of the 'free' programs, and am careful about what sites I visit.

If you are looking for a trouble-free computer, there is no such thing!

🙂 I have 4 Dells as well, and one Sony. Agree, you have to stay on top of them to keep them running right, especially if you use the Internet a lot. Right now I am of the mind to change my computer brand. Problems with the quad-core machine and a mini12 that died one month out of warranty. Bad Luck no doubt Build your own? I have been tempted, may for my daughters next desktop. Prices are so low now I can't really justify it on those grounds. The XPS9000 is unique though, it really should be bullet-proof.

I bought the Dells not because they are great, but because they are cheap! By cheap I mean cheap; not inexpensive.

The most reliable one is the one I built using the i7-920 CPU a year and a half ago.

So switching brands will only give you problems; the only difference is that these problems will be with a different brand. Just look at the postings here and you will see what I mean.

For best performance, build your own.

You mentioned 'starts of its own'. Try plugging in the computer directly to a wall outlet instead of the cheap 6-outlet power strips that most people use. The technician who made the house call may not have been savvy enough to analyze the entire system, and might have checked just the computer.
