Suddenly cannot create new folders

All of a sudden I can not create sub-folders to organize my files. I used to 'right click' to create new folders but that stopped working. Clicking on the 'new folder' tab did not respond. Ideas?

First update your anti-virus and run a full scan. Then download, update, and run malwarebytes free. That probably will fix your problem. If not, get back to us.

Did not work. Can only create a new folder on my desktop, then cut and paste as a document subfolder

What happens when you try right-clicking in (or on) a folder, and choosing: new/folder? Do you get an error message?

Right click drop down does not offer the option to create a new folder. If the 'new folder' button on the menu bar above the folders list is clicked it highlights but nothing happens.

Had similar problem in both Windows 7 and Windows 8 (64-bit) turned out to be caused by a Context Menu item inserted by Memeo LifeAgent Explore Extension Version 4.0.0.114. I used ShellExView (Free) to locate and disable the item. If you're not using Memeo Backup (Comes with Seagate backup drives) your problem may be caused by another Context Menu item. Get ShellExView at http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

I, too, am suddenly having the same problem after Windows 7 (64-bit) updates installed yesterday. When I right click on the desktop, I no longer see "create new folder" as an option. I do, however, still see "create new compressed folder). When folders are opened, "new folder" button is there at top menu, but when I click it, nothing at all happens; no error, no folder; nothing...
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated,

I wish I had an answer for you. Sounds like you are having THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM I am having. It s soooooo frustrating!!!! I can't seem to figure out what is going on!!! I have tried evderything. I have been trying to solve this problem for the last four hours...uuugh!!!!

So far, no-one who's having the same problem has said whether they have the Seagate/Memeo utility installed or whether they tried the previous advice from back in January.

I have also lost the "create a folder" option completely in Wiindows 8. I do have Seagate. I will have to reread your instructions as I'm not all that savvy.

I dont have seagate or whatever.
In a new window or any window, or on desktop i 'right click' and instead of having the option to create a new folder, it has 'create shortcut'....?

Found this worked for me -written by Linda Yan Microsoft tech moderator
The issue should be caused by damaged or incorrect registry key entry. Please check the following registry value:
1. Click Start, type regedit in Search Bar, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New\
3. Please check if the value for (Default) is: {D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}
If the issue persists after changing the registry key value, please continue to try the following suggestions:
1. Click Start, type regedit in Search Bar, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder
3. Right click on the Folder key on the left pane, and then select "Export" to backup this registry key.
4. Go to my Skydrive and download folderfix.zip file.
5. Save the folderfix.zip file on to your Desktop.
6. Right click and extract the folderfix.reg file.
7. Right click on the folderfix.reg file and then click Merge.
8. Click Yes to confirm the modification.

Good find, missdiscipline but I would add to that the need to back up the Registry before messing with it, however safe the video or link you've seen or read.

Choose Export from the File menu and note the name and location of the backup you're about to create. It may be crucial if the system falls over because of some misinformation from the Net or something in your system that didn't match the one the advice was based on.

I used missdisciplne's solution. I had to download folderfix and after I merged it with my registry I can now create new folders.
