[SOLVED] Suggestion on buying the alienware graphics Amplifier with rtx 2070 super

My name is David. I currently have an alienware 15R2 laptop. Its specs are
i7-6820HK
Nvidia Geforce GTX 980M
16GB ram
I am planning to buy an alienware graphics amplifier and a rtx 2070 super to put in it. The concern I have is how much performance will I lose compared to the desktop version, Is it really worth the investment. I am also afraid if the CPU will become a bottleneck. Overall how much performance will I lose?
Please give some advice on this matter

What resolution would you want to game at with the newly purchased GPU and GPU dock? You'd be okay with 1080p gaming at high or higher details but will struggle once you go over 1080p.

I actually want to play games at 1440p. 2070 super should easily run games at 1440p, right? is my CPU going to decrease the performance that drastically? if I cant play games at 1440p after spending 600$ on GPU then I guess its not worth the cost. My 980m ran shadow of the tomb raider on ultra settings(1080P) at 40fps (avg). How much fps do you think the 2070 super can get on this game if I connected it using the GPU dock?

As a test drop the resolution to 720p and medium settings and try your games. This will give you a rough idea of the best FPS you can achieve. The cpu to a large extent determines the best FPS you can achieve, the gpu determines at what resolution and game settings you can achieve that FPS at.

There is about a 10% performance loss on any external Graphics card you plug in. A few reasons is the interface and motherboard bus etc. Laptops are just not as high performance as their desktop counter part. The gap has closed allot over the years but a laptop will always be a step behind a desktop.

Is it really worth the investment? - Yes, Just getting a 1080 external graphics card is a huge boost. to go for a 2070 if you have the cash sure. but the gain will not be that much over a 1080 when considering the cost. There is not much special about the 20 series over the 10series and you will save a ton of money if you are cash strapped. Like a said there is not that much performance lost compared to a desktop.

My 980M struggles when playing The Division and with the 1080 I play on Ultra and its a breeze.

I have an external 1080 and it performs very close to my GFs alienware M17 Geforce 2070. I think the frame rate is almost the same.

You will probably get about 60-80FPS on shadow of the tomb raider on Ultra settings on the 2070 Super and I think thats a conservative estimate. @4k resolution you probably get about 25-30 FPS with the super maybe even 40fps. The CPU bottleneck will depend on the Game but a 6820k is still a 4GHz chip with 4cores and hyper threading, games dont use the CPU that much so its unlikely the CPU will steal allot of performance. I havnt tested this but with my 1080 i have no problems.

Thanks for the information mate. On what resolution do you play at? I am actually planning to play at 1440p with the 2070 super. And also in my country gtx 1080 price is twice the price of 2070, thats the reason I am going for 2070. Do you think I can play latest AAA games at 1440p ultra with 2070 super??
